Facilitation Protocol
01 The Primordial Ground (30 mins)
Students must completely obliterate the white of the substrate. Encourage the use of powdered charcoal or washes of ink. The goal is a "total vacuum." Discuss the psychological weight of the black surface before beginning the subtraction.
02 Solvent Disturbance (45 mins)
Introduce solvents. Demonstrate how alcohol lifts ink differently than water. Encourage "controlled accidents"—dripping, spraying, and blotting. The focus here is on the chemical reaction between the liquid and the dried pigment.
03 Abrasive Excavation (60 mins)
Shift to mechanical removal. Use steel wool for soft highlights and blades for sharp, linear light. This is where the form begins to "emerge" from the density. Remind students: every mark they make is an act of bringing light into the world.

The Hydrophobic Mask
Apply liquid wax or heavy cold wax medium in sharp, expressive strokes. Once set, wash over with high-flow ink. The "shatter" effect occurs at the perimeter. This creates a conceptual wall—an area where the surface refuses to integrate.

Layer Pumice Gel mixed with pigment using palette knives. While wet, press industrial collage elements (mesh, wire, torn canvas) into the paste. The medium acts as both pigment and structural adhesive.
