Dimensional Journeys

A comprehensive 6th-grade art unit exploring the intersection of global traditions, elements of art, and three-dimensional sculpting. Students transition from flat designs to sculptural forms using sketching, color theory, and paper-construction techniques.

Notan Harmony

Students dive into the Japanese concept of Notan (light-dark balance) to explore shape, line, and contrast. They sketch balanced designs and execute a paper-cutting composition that plays with positive and negative space.

Alebrije Assemblage

Students study Mexican Alebrijes (folk art sculptures) to learn about form, spatial awareness, and armatures. They design a hybrid creature, sketch it from multiple angles, construct a 3D cardboard armature, and paint it using color theory and visual texture.

Architectural Reliefs

Students explore historical architectural relief carvings from global traditions. They learn about depth, value, and relief modeling (high and low relief), sculpting a relief plaque and finishing it with a watercolor/acrylic wash to create depth.
