"Good morning artists! Today all we need is a simple pencil and eraser. A pencil looks basic, but it can create thousands of surface illusions: dragon scales, spiky hedgehogs, rough tree bark, or soft animal fur! That is called visual texture . By pressing lightly, pressing firmly, and drawing marks close together, you can make your creature look like it is ready to leap off the page!"
Pencil Pressure Secret:
"Level 1 is a light feather whisper (for sketch outlines). Level 4 is firm and deep (for dark shadows and heavy outer contours)!"
Density Golden Rule:
"Pack your pencil marks tightly to make deep shadows. Space them apart to make areas look soft and bright!"
Guiding Part 1: Pencil Swatch Training (8 Min)
Hand out Page 1 of the packet and ensure every student has a sharp pencil and eraser.Have students complete the Pencil Pressure Scale (1 to 4) and practice all 6 texture swatches.
Emphasize: "Keep your pencil tip sharp. Draw intentional lines rather than fast, messy scribbles."

3-Step Main Studio Project (Page 2 of Worksheet • 25 Min)
Step 1: Light Sketch & Partition
Students lightly sketch a creature outline with Level 1 pencil pressure. Then, divide the body into 4–6 sections with flowing contour lines.
Step 2: Fill Pencil Textures
Fill each section with a unique repetitive pencil texture . Alternate dark dense textures with light open textures for maximum visual pop.
Step 3: Contrast & Highlights
Press firmly (Level 4 pressure) to darken the outer silhouette lines. Use eraser edges to dab clean highlights into textured areas.
