ARTIST PROFILE
Who Was James Rizzi?
1950 – 2011 🗽
1
Brooklyn Born & Raised
Rizzi grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He loved the bustling sidewalks, speeding yellow cabs, and soaring skyscrapers.
2
Art Should Bring Smiles!
He believed art should never be stuffy or serious. He packed his work with humorous cartoon characters, bright sunshine, and happy crowds.
3
The Pop Art Movement
Pop artists use ideas from everyday life—like comic books, advertisements, and big city noise—to make joyful masterpieces.
RIZZI FUN FACT!
He Invented 3D Paper Art!
In art school, Rizzi couldn't choose between printmaking and sculpture, so he did both! He cut out hand-printed shapes and popped them up using tiny foam spacers.
"You don't have to be serious to be a great artist."

PART 1
Artwork Detective: Looking Closely at Rizzi's City
1. Describe two different emotions you saw on the buildings in James Rizzi's artwork. How could you tell what they were feeling?
2. Rizzi used bold black outlines around every object. Why do you think he chose black lines instead of soft, blurry edges?
3. In the Happy Rizzi House, windows are shaped like hearts, stars, and eyes. What shape window would you design for your own bedroom, and why?
PART 2
