Welcome students at the door. Lead a simple standing physical stretch followed by a "Human Metronome" exercise. Challenge the class to clap a steady beat collectively in perfect silence, matching tempos without vocal cues. Once synchronized, transition into a 3-part vocal siren.

Choral Chemistry Survey (Individual)
Distribute the 2-page Vocal Voices Student Survey. Explain that chorus is a community of diverse musical backgrounds. Highlight the tiered design: Path A is tailored for singers new to high school choral performance, and Path B is for returning section leaders and experienced vocalists. Allow quiet reflection time.

Whole-Class Discussion (Slide Guided)
Project the Discussion Slides to anchor the conversation. Focus on collective expectations, vulnerable music-making, and what makes a high-functioning section. Let students share answers to "My Ultimate Chorus Anthem" and discuss how newcomers and veteran leaders can support each other to build a unified sound.

The First Unison Sound
Gather in vocal sections. Teach a short, catchy 4-measure vocal canon by rote (e.g., a simple rhythmic folk song or vocal round). Encourage returning leaders to help pilot the pitch center for their sections. Experience the immediate satisfaction of layered harmony on Day 1.
Pedagogical Strategies
Creating Psychological Safety
Singing is inherently vulnerable. Reassure students that the survey is diagnostic and private, not graded. Emphasize that every vocal timber, from deep bass to light soprano, is vital to the group's collective acoustic chemistry.
Empowering Returning Leaders
Use the returning leaders' survey data (Path B) to identify mentors. Empower them immediately to set high vocal standards, run section sign-ins, organize music binders, and model active vocal posture and listening skills.
