Smooth Blending Teacher Plan Week 1 Teacher Guide Intervention Tier 2/3 • 4th Grade MLL
Smooth Blending Instructional Plan
Focus: Continuous Phonation & Consonant Digraphs (sh, ch, th, ck, wh)
QPS Task 3 Bridge
Learner Profile & Diagnostic Analysis
Current Baseline
Knows individual letter sounds; decodes simple CVC words in isolation but halts at consonant clusters and digraphs.
Root Cause in QPS 3
Choppy segmentation (c-a-t -> forgets first sound) and treating 2-letter digraphs as separate phonemes (s-h-i-p).
MLL Linguistic Asset
Leverages shared cognates, visual mouth-articulation cues, and oral language grounding to attach immediate meaning.
The Continuous Phonation Routine ("Singing the Sounds")
Traditional Choppy Blending (Avoid)
Student pauses between sounds: /sh/ ... /i/ ... /p/.
Why it fails: Working memory drops the first sound before reaching the coda, common in English learners.
Continuous Voice Routine (Target)
Student holds continuous airflow: "shhh-iii-ppp".
Teacher cue: "Keep your motor running! Do not stop your voice between sounds until the word snaps together."
Step-by-Step Teacher Script: Digraph Continuous Blend
1
Visual Articulation Anchor: Show the digraph card sh. Point to your lips rounded: "Two letters, one team sound: /sh/. Feel the air blow smooth like quiet water."
2
Finger Glide on Elkonin Boxes: Touch under sh, slide finger to i, then snap to p: "Sing with me without stopping: shh-ii-p... Word? SHIP!"
3
MLL Meaning Anchor: Point to photo of cargo boat: "A ship is a large boat that travels across oceans. What is the word? Ship."
4
Immediate Error Correction: If student says "/s/ /h/ /i/ /p/" , gently pause: "Look at S and H together. They are best friends. They say /sh/. Let's slide: shhh-iii-p."

Initial Blend Builders Guide
Focus: CCVC Patterns (S-Blends, L-Blends, R-Blends) & Successive Blending
QPS Task 3 CCVC Core
Critical Distinction: Digraphs vs. Blends
Week 1 Review: Digraphs (Team Sound)
Two letters lock together to produce ONE brand-new sound.
s + h = /sh/ (1 phoneme)
Week 2 Focus: Blends (Fast Friends)
Each consonant keeps its sound, but they slide tight with NO vowel between.
s + t = /s/ /t/ (2 phonemes)
Addressing MLL Epenthesis (Vowel Intrusion: "es-stop")
Why it occurs: In Spanish and several Arabic dialects, words never begin with an /s/ + consonant cluster (e.g., escuela, estrella ). Multilingual learners naturally prefix an /e/ or /ə/ vowel ("es-stop" or "uh-stop").
The "Snake Hiss" Articulation Cue Script:
"Listen to me: ssss... stop. Close your teeth first. Don't open your mouth until the hiss starts! Hear the snake hiss: sss-top. Not 'es-stop'. Just pure snake: /s/ -> /t/ -> /op/."
The "Add-a-Sound" Auditory Chaining Protocol
1
Build the Familiar CVC Base: Place letter tiles for p - o - t. Student reads: "pot" .
2
Snap the Initial Blend Tile: Slide s in front of pot. Say: "What sound did I add at the beginning? /s/! Now let's slide: s-pot -> spot!"
3
Successive Blending Strategy: If 4 phonemes overwhelm working memory: Blend sound 1 + sound 2 (st-), then add vowel (ste-), then add coda (stem).

QPS Task 3 Culmination
Overcoming Coda Deletion (Final Consonant Dropping)
Linguistic Explanation
Many primary languages (e.g., Cantonese, Vietnamese, Spanish) have strict syllable codas with few or no final consonant clusters. Students often truncate: camp → "cam" or fast → "fas".
The "Puff of Air" Anchor Routine
Hold palm 2 inches in front of mouth when saying final stops (/p/, /t/, /d/). Say: "Did your hand feel the puff for /t/ in 'fast'? Do not let the word sleep before the end sound arrives!"
The Week 3 Structural Leap: CVC → CVCC → CCVCC
Step 1: Final Blends (CVCC) jump, test, hand
Single initial consonant, 2 blended final consonants.
Step 2: Full Clusters (CCVCC) blast, plant, stand

The Grand Camp Trip
Blends & Digraphs Unified
Glenn and Trent went on a grand camp trip in the green hills. Glenn pitched the big green tent next to a tall oak plant. Trent had a heavy black pack with pots and cups.
"Let us rest on this flat rock," said Trent. "The sun is hot, but the wind is fresh." They ate crisp chips and drank cool milk. Suddenly, a quick frog jumped with a splash onto a damp log!
Glenn began to clap and grin. "This camp trip is the best!" They sang a glad song as dusk fell softly over the camp.
Vocabulary Helper: pitched = set up a tent with poles; damp = a little bit wet; dusk = the time right before night when the sun sets.
4 Story Check: Write complete sentences using words from the story
1. Where did Glenn pitch the big green tent?
2. What jumped onto the damp log with a splash?
