Paragraph Puzzle Detectives
Lesson Duration 45–60 Minutes
Equip multilingual learners to build cohesive informational paragraphs through a tactile cut-and-glue detective game: identifying 1 focus statement (top bun), 2 supporting key details (fillings), and 1 conclusion (bottom bun).
Learning Objectives (WIDA Aligned)
Content: Students will cut, sort, and glue 1 focus statement, 2 key details, and 1 conclusion to assemble a cohesive 4-sentence paragraph.
Language: Students will orally justify their sentence roles with partners using color-coded sentence frames before gluing.
Key Concepts & Sandwich Metaphor
1 1 Focus Statement (Green): Top bun. Tells the big idea of the paragraph.
2 2 Key Details (Yellow): Juicy fillings. Provide facts, clues, and examples.
3 1 Conclusion (Blue): Bottom bun. Wraps up and holds everything together.
Instructional Pacing & Routine
10 Min
Hook: The 4-Piece Paragraph Sandwich
Hold up a visual sandwich model. Point to the top bun (1 Focus Statement), the middle fillings (2 Key Details), and the bottom bun (1 Conclusion). Explain that today, detectives will cut and glue pieces together to solve mystery paragraphs!
10 Min
Teacher Modeling: Think-Aloud & Dry Sort
Demonstrate cutting strips cleanly along dashed lines. Model a "dry sort" before gluing: "Before I open my glue stick, I test my sentences on the board! Does sentence B introduce the whole topic? Yes, that's my focus statement!"
20 Min
Partner Game: Cut, Sort, & Glue Mystery Cases
Pairs receive child scissors, glue sticks, and the Cut & Glue game sheets. Students cut strips, use talk frames to agree on roles (1 Focus, 2 Details, 1 Conclusion), and glue strips into designated case zones.
10 Min
Independent Application & Exit Check
Students complete the Paragraph Builder Worksheet individually, demonstrating mastery of the 1-2-1 structure and drafting an original conclusion.
Oral Language Talk Frames (Post on Whiteboard)
Focus Frame (Top Bun): "Strip [letter] is the focus statement because it introduces the big topic."
Key Detail Frame (Fillings): "Strips [letters] are key details because they give clues and facts about the topic."
Conclusion Frame (Bottom Bun): "Strip [letter] is the conclusion because it uses clearly / truly to wrap up."
