Oral Language & Argument
Step-by-Step Explicit Teaching Protocol
1. "I DO" — Teacher Modeling (Visuals + TPR Gestures) 3–4 min
Prompt 1 (Model Choice): Hold up a picture of a puppy. Say: "Watch me! I want a dog. It is playful. Now I join it: I want a dog because it is playful." Point to each word on the mat.
Prompt 2 (Introduce 'Convince'): Use Total Physical Response (TPR). Gesture toward students with open hands: "Convince means to make someone say YES!" Nod head enthusiastically and flash a big thumbs up 👍.
Prompt 3 (Model Persuasion): Act animated! "I want to convince you! You should choose a dog because it can play fetch with you!"
2. "WE DO" — Choral Echo & Substitution 4–5 min
Echo Reading Routine: Teacher says frame ➔ Students echo together with gesture. "My turn: I want a cat. Your turn!" ➔ Class echoes.
Word Substitution: Hold up picture cards (fish, turtle, rabbit). Point to word bank on Page 1. Prompt class to chorally fill in: "I want a [bunny] because it is [soft]!"
Vocabulary Chant: Clap rhythm: "Con-vince! Make them say YES! Con-vince! Share your best!"
3. "YOU DO" — Structured Turn-and-Talk 5–6 min
Partner A picks an animal and uses a frame to convince Partner B. Partner B listens, points to the response box, and replies: "You convinced me!" or "I agree!" Then swap roles!
