Core Instructional Procedures (Phases 1β3)
1 Warm-Up & Frame Choral Drill Standard: 7 min β’ Express: 4 min
Choral drill of frames. Focus on rhythm and natural contractions ("Yes, I do" / "No, I don't"). Contrast core shopping terms: cheap vs. expensive, try on vs. buy. In Express track, jump immediately into pair practice after 3 choral repetitions.
2 Protocol Rules & Fishbowl Demo Standard: 6 min β’ Express: 2 min
Demonstrate with one student: Student A asks continuously; Student B answers using complete frames; swap roles instantly when the chime rings. In Express track, skip full fishbowl and state rules directly: "A asks, chime, B asks, switch partners."
3 Rotation 1: Foundational Speed Sprints Standard: 12 min β’ Express: 10 min
Distribute Round 1 Speaking Cards. Run timed partner sprints: Express: 2 partner pairs Γ 5 min each (2.5 min Student A asks, 2.5 min Student B asks). Standard: 3 partner pairs Γ 4 min each. Emphasize eye contact and speed over perfection.

High-intensity spoken output without paperwork transitions. Maximize speaking reps!
Express Protocol
0:00 β 4:00 (4 min)
Rapid Warm-Up
Choral drill of 6 board frames. Review online vs mall, cheap vs expensive.
4:00 β 14:00 (10 min)
Round 1 Sprints
2 partners Γ 5 min. Focus on instant response and confidence.
14:00 β 24:00 (10 min)
Round 2 Challenge
2 partners Γ 5 min. Demand "Why?", comparisons, and full reasons.
24:00 β 30:00 (6 min)
Oral Spotlight
No Exit Ticket: 4β5 students share a partner's preference + delayed board correction.
4 Rotation 2: Challenge & Expansion Exchange Standard: 12 min β’ Express: 10 min
Distribute Round 2 Speaking Cards. Questions include comparisons ("Do you prefer the mall or online shopping?") and habits ("What do you never buy?"). In both tracks, push students to avoid single-word answers by asking "Why?".
5 Closing Synthesis: Standard vs. Express Standard: 8 min β’ Express: 6 min
In Standard Track: Students complete the written Market Survey Student Worksheet (interviewing 3 peers and writing 3 summary sentences).
In Express Track: Skip written forms entirely. Run a "Popcorn Spotlight": call on 4β5 students to report aloud using "My partner [Name] prefers... because...".
Fluency Coaching & Error Correction Protocol
β Never Interrupt Fluency Sprints:
Do not break student momentum to correct pronunciation or missed plurals during timed rotations.
β
Delayed Group Correction:
Jot down 2β3 recurring slips on a clipboard. Address them anonymously on the board during the final 3 minutes.
Emerging / Scaffolding
Keep board sentence frames pointed out. Allow emerging speakers to point to prompt card options before speaking. Pair with supportive peers.
Advanced / Extension
Turn prompt cards face down; answer from memory. Enforce the "Two-Sentence Rule": every answer must include a reason with "because".
