Letter Builders Teacher Guide Letter Builders Facilitation Guide
Week 1 Teacher Guide • 2nd Grade ESL Instructional Scaffolds
Teacher Resource
Daily 15-Minute Routine
Learning Objective
Students will categorize lowercase letters into Tall (head to toe), Small (waist to toe), and Fall (hanging tails) letters, maintaining steady baseline contact and correct stroke sequence.
ESL Language Scaffolds
Pair letter naming with concrete physical cues. Emphasize directional terms: top / sky, middle / belt, bottom / ground, down / below . Use hand gestures before pencil touches paper.
15-Minute Daily Instructional Sequence
1
Kinesthetic Warm-Up & Air Writing
3 Minutes
Have students stand. Model strokes in the air with full arm extensions using verbal cues: "Sky to grass!" for tall stems, "Around, push up, pull down!" for circle-stem letters (a, d, g).
2
Guided Tracing with Color Cueing
5 Minutes
Students trace the shaded models on the Letter Builders packet. Encourage two-finger check: non-dominant hand anchors the page flat, dominant hand holds pencil with tripod grip. Circulate to ensure students start letters from top to bottom.
3
Independent Formation & Star Self-Check
7 Minutes
Students write on the blank primary lines. They pick their cleanest letter and put a neat circle around it, then check their work against the three checkboxes at the bottom of the page.
Common Second-Grade ESL Roadblocks & Quick Fixes
Reversals: b vs. d
Teach the "bat and ball" rule for b (bat comes down first, then the ball). Teach "magic c" for d (draw the circle 'c' first, then go high up for the stick).
Floating Letters / Baseline Gaps
Color the baseline line with a green highlighter or marker ("grass line"). Remind students: "Letters need to plant their feet on the grass so they don't float away into the clouds."
Bottom-to-Top Letter Strokes
Place a tiny green dot at the top starting point of each blank line. Teach: "English letters always fall from the sky down like gentle raindrops."
Fall Letters Trapped on Line
Letters like g, p, y often get squished above the baseline. Use the "monkey tail" analogy: the body sits on the branch, and the tail hangs down underneath.
Multilingual Connection: Reinforce the anchor nouns (apple / manzana / تفاحة, book / libro / كتاب) to bridge oral English vocabulary with motor print.
