Audio Detectives: 3-Day Partner Challenge
Grade 7 ELL Duo
Speaking & Listening Focus
Instructional Purpose & Classroom Setup
With most peers out on a field trip, this mini-unit transforms the remaining pair of 7th-grade ELL students into an investigative podcast production team. Over three 45–60 minute sessions, partners investigate The Case of the Whispering Clock , conduct recorded partner interviews, write suspenseful audio dialogue, and broadcast a live mini-podcast.
Speaking Targets (WIDA / CCSS)
Pose probing follow-up questions using modal verbs (could, would, might ).
Clarify and paraphrase partner responses before adding new ideas.
Vary vocal intonation, volume, and pacing to convey suspense and character mood.
Listening Targets (WIDA / CCSS)
Identify key factual discrepancies between two eyewitness accounts.
Note auditory cues and sound effect timing during collaborative rehearsals.
Provide targeted, constructive peer praise using descriptive language frames.

Teacher Role
Day 1: Witness Interview
Roleplay Detective vs. Museum Curator; record witness statements on dossier.
Question starters, evidence cue cards, bilingual vocabulary bank.
Model question tone; facilitate role swap at 20-min mark.
Day 2: Mystery Storycraft
Synthesize clues into a 2-page radio script; design live foley sound effects.
Dialogue templates, transition sentence frames, suspense word wall.
Coach sound timing and pacing; provide props (keys, rulers, cups).
Day 3: The Live Broadcast
Rehearse, record 3–5 min audio show, complete active listener reflection.
Broadcast etiquette chart, partner compliment stems, rubric.
Operate audio recorder/phone, present Investigator Badges.
High-Leverage Talk Stems for the Duo
To Clarify:
"Can you explain what you meant when you said...?"
To Build On:
"Adding to that evidence, that means the clock stopped at..."
To Negotiate:
"What if our narrator whispers this line while you tap the desk?"

Daily Facilitation & Responsive Scaffolds
Partner Coaching Toolkit
Day 1 Facilitation: Partner Investigation & Witness Exchange
45–50 Mins
Step 1 (10 min): Hook the pair using the Day 1 Slides. Reveal the case: the antique museum clock vanished at midnight, leaving only an audio tape and a strange note. Model an interview with Student A.
Step 2 (20 min): Student A adopts the Detective persona; Student B plays Dr. Sterling (the Clock Curator) using their confidential clue sheet. Swap roles halfway through for the second witness.
Step 3 (15 min): The pair compares notes in the Detective Dossier, identifying 3 key contradictions in the testimonies.
ELL Tip: Encourage students to gesture, point to clue cards, or sketch while speaking if vocabulary momentarily stalls.
Day 2 Facilitation: Radio Script & Soundscape Lab
45–50 Mins
Step 1 (10 min): Display Day 2 Slides. Introduce Foley Sound Effects (making thunder with paper, footfalls with shoes, ticking with pencils). Have students test 3 classroom sound effects.
Step 2 (25 min): Partners co-author the 3-scene Audio Drama Script. Each student writes their character's lines and designates sound cue triggers (e.g., [CREAK] or [CLOCK TICKS] ).
Step 3 (10 min): First full vocal read-through. Focus on vocal modulation (whispering suspense vs. shouting panic).
ELL Tip: Provide colored highlighters: yellow for Partner A's dialogue, blue for Partner B's dialogue, pink for Foley sound triggers.
Day 3 Facilitation: Recording & Broadcast Showcase
45–50 Mins
Step 1 (10 min): Audio rehearsal and microphone warm-up (tongue twisters, breathing exercises, mic distance tips).
Step 2 (20 min): Final broadcast recording. Use a smartphone, laptop voice memo, or digital recorder. Allow up to 2 takes.
Step 3 (15 min): Playback and debrief. Students complete their Active Listener Critique & Reflection, exchange partner commendations, and receive their Audio Detective badges.
ELL Tip: Celebrate expressive mistakes! Emphasize that dramatic pauses and vocal characterization matter far more than flawless English grammar.
Responsive ELL Scaffolding Matrix
If students feel shy or hesitant to speak:
Switch to "Echo Reading" where you model one sentence with dramatic expression, then the student repeats it. Offer 30 seconds of silent thinking time before asking them to answer.
If one student dominates the conversation:
Introduce the "Detective Badge Token." Whoever holds the physical token holds the speaking floor; they must physically pass it across the desk after completing their turn.

WITNESS 1
Dr. Julian Sterling (Museum Clock Curator)
Read aloud in an anxious, formal voice
"I was working late in the antique gallery polishing the emerald clock casing until 11:50 PM. Suddenly, the hallway lights flickered out! I heard heavy, rubber work boots stomping down toward the basement vault. The gold vault key was still safely on its wall hook when I locked up and ran to the lobby!"

Partner A Asks • Partner B Answers
1. "Dr. Sterling, what exact time did you notice the lights flicker, and what did you hear next?"
2. "You stated the vault key was still on the wall hook. Who else has access to that specific key?"
3. Follow-Up Probe: "Can you explain why..." (Detective creates their own question!)

Morgan Ray (Museum Night Electrician)
Read aloud in a calm, defensive tone
"I was downstairs in the electrical basement testing the museum circuit breakers all night. At 11:45 PM, Dr. Sterling ran downstairs panicked and claimed the clock was already stolen! But here's the strange part: I saw Dr. Sterling holding the velvet clock cover, and they were wearing muddy green garden boots, not dress shoes!"
1. "Morgan, where were you when the power cut off, and did you leave the basement?"
2. "What did you see Dr. Sterling carrying, and why does that contradict what they told us?"
3. Follow-Up Probe: "Could you describe the exact boots and bag you noticed...?"
