Core Vocabulary & Expressive Sentence Frames
Feature (Attribute): A special detail about how an item looks, feels, or works.
Category: A family or group of things that belong together.
Curiosity: A strange, rare, or fascinating object.
Frame 1: "This is a [item]. It belongs to [category]."
Frame 2: "It is made of [material] and its job is to [function]."
Frame 3: "Both of these have [shared feature], but only this one is [unique feature]."
1 The Shopkeeper's Mystery (Warm-Up & Hook)
10 Minutes
Wear a playful magnifying glass or shopkeeper hat. Introduce the narrative: "Welcome to the Curiosity Shop! A shipment of quirky treasures just arrived from around the world, but the crates tipped over! Before customers arrive, we must inspect each curio and sort them onto our display shelves."
Teacher Action: Hold up a real or pictured odd object (e.g., a fuzzy teapot or a wooden key). Model noticing single features vs. compound features: "I see stripes, but it is also made of wood. Is it a toy, or a tool?"

Project Slide Deck (Slides 2–4). Teach students the 4 Wonder Keys for inspecting any curio:

3 Cabinet Sorting Game (Guided Small Group Stations)
15 Minutes
Divide students into pairs or trios. Distribute the Curiosity Cabinet Sorting Mats and cut-out Curio Cards.
Round 1: Single Feature Match
Students sort cards by Material (Wood vs. Fabric vs. Metal) or Pattern (Spots vs. Stripes).
Round 2: Multi-Attribute Venn Rule
Teacher announces a compound rule: "Find an item that is SOFT AND has SPOTS" or "METAL AND used to MEASURE."
4 Feature Detective Sheet

Learners complete the 2-page student worksheet. Page 1 asks them to check off multi-attribute semantic features; Page 2 prompts them to spot the "odd curio out" and design their own mystery curio using target sentence frames.
💡 Tip: Encourage students to whisper their sentence frames aloud before writing!
5 Grand Showcase Debrief
5 Min
Gather at the carpet. Invite 2–3 "Apprentice Curators" to present their created curio to the class. The audience must guess the item's primary category and materials based on the description alone.

Tiered Differentiation Pathways
Emerging / Kindergarten
Limit cards to 6 items with high-contrast color/pattern differences.
Use physical realia or tactile swatches (felt, wood block, metal spoon).
Provide pre-cut icon stickers for sentence frames.
Grade 1 Target Core
Sort with 2 simultaneous criteria (e.g., Fabric + Spotted).
Verbally state both category and functional use.
Complete feature grid independently with partner checking.
Grade 2 / Extension
Multi-attribute Venn diagram sorting (3 intersecting features).
Formulate contrastive paragraphs: "Although curio A and B are both toys, they differ because..."
Invent catalog labels with pricing and origin stories.
Quick Observational Checklist
Receptive Sorting Matches items based on at least 2 distinct attributes without adult cues.
