Standardized tests like the GRE and TOEFL often include questions that require locating a single fact tucked into a 700-word passage. Graduate students often waste time reading the surrounding sentences rather than "sniping" the data and moving on.
The Hook: "Where's the Data?"
Project a complex page (e.g., a page from The Economist or a financial report). Give students 10 seconds to find a very specific number (e.g., "The price of wheat in 2008").
Teacher Tip:
Watch their eye movements. If they are reading left-to-right, they will fail. Look for those who are scanning vertically or diagonally.
