Need & Want Quest • Teacher Lesson Plan Page 1 of 2

Lesson Plan: Delivery & Differentiation

Stages 3–6 & Teacher Guidance

Stage 3: Speaking Cards Activity (12 min)

Distribute sets of the 16 Need Want Speaking Cards. Students work in pairs: Partner A picks a card and asks the prompt (e.g., "What do you need in the desert?"). Partner B responds using the structured sentence frame. After 3 cards, students switch roles.

Stage 4: Worksheet Execution (13 min)

Distribute the 2-page Need Want Practice Worksheet. Students complete Page 1 first (Exercises 1–3), then proceed to Page 2 (Exercises 4–6). Check Exercise 4 (chart) where students discuss whether a smartphone is a need or a want.

Stage 5: Review & Formative Check (5 min)

Project Slide 7. Review Exercise 6 (negatives). Remind students that "I don't need" takes a noun (jacket), while "I don't need to" takes an action verb (hurry). Call on individual students to read complete sentences aloud.

Stage 6: Exit Ticket & Closure (5 min)

Every student writes on a sticky note or says aloud: "Today I need to ________, and I want to ________." Verify both sentences use base verbs before leaving.

A1 Differentiation Toolkit

Scaffolding for Emerging Learners

  • Provide two-color highlighters: blue for nouns, red for verbs.
  • Allow students to refer to the Speaking Card sentence frames continuously.
  • Focus on 1st person ("I need / I want") before testing 3rd person singular ("he/she").

Extension for Fast Finishers

  • Write 3 sentences comparing family weekend needs vs. weekend wishes.
  • Create a new speaking card based on visiting Mecca, Medina, or Diriyah.
  • Practice forming questions ("Do you need a pencil?").

Cultural Context & Common Pitfalls

Mistake: "I need buying."
Fix: Point to rule: NO -ing. Drill "need to + verb".

Context: Kashta & Eid
Note: Use local cultural anchors (Eid sweets, desert camp) for authentic engagement.

Mistake: "A phone is a need."
Fix: Ask: "Can you live without it? Then it is a want!"
