A two-part critical thinking sequence for Grade 2 ESL inclusion classrooms, pairing comparative reasoning and real-world problem solving with structured visual and linguistic scaffolds.
Case 2 (Tool Decision & Justification): Correct choice: Tool B (Plastic Bucket). Exemplar Reason: "I choose Tool B because the plastic bucket will not let mud leak through, and mud would soak through a cloth backpack and make a mess."
Assessment Page Guidance & Scoring
Question 1: Bicycle vs. Bus (4 pts)
• 1A (Same - 2 pts): Both have wheels / both are vehicles / both carry people from place to place.
• 1B (Different - 2 pts): A bicycle carries 1 person, but a school bus carries many students. (OR: A bus has an engine, however a bike needs pedals).
Question 2: Beak Function Reasoning (4 pts)
• Exemplar (4 pts): "A hummingbird's beak is long and thin like a straw so it can reach sweet nectar in flowers, but a hawk has a strong hooked beak to tear meat. A hummingbird's beak is too soft and thin to catch or eat meat."
• Note for ESL: Credit reasoning even if grammar or spelling is imperfect (e.g. "Hummingbird beak soft for flower, not hawk meat" receives full reasoning credit).
Critical Thinking & Reasoning Rubric (Separate from English Mechanics)
1 - Emerging
2 - Developing
3 - Proficient
4 - Advanced
Identifies isolated items without comparison; provides single-word answers or copies visual labels without explanation.
Notes obvious physical difference (size, color) but does not link difference to purpose; attempts "because" without evidence.
Accurately identifies similarities and differences; explains the functional reason using evidence and causal connector "because".
Provides nuanced comparison, considers multiple constraints (e.g., weather, durability), and articulates consequences if choices swapped.
• Exemplar Revised Solution: "Ask the teacher to fill a large water pitcher with paper cups from the nurse/sink, or have students who brought personal water bottles share unopened bottles or wash hands at bathroom sinks."
• Exemplar Justification: "...because everyone is thirsty after gym and waiting for the broken fountain won't give anyone water before class ends."
Problem-Solving & Revision Rubric
1 - Emerging
2 - Developing
3 - Proficient
4 - Advanced
Selects strategy randomly or chooses unworkable extreme; gives no reason or states "because I like it".
Selects viable strategy with partial reason; struggles to explain why alternative strategies fail; resists revising plan.
Selects effective strategy and justifies with functional cause-and-effect; adapts solution sensibly when new constraint appears.
Anticipates obstacles; crafts creative, inclusive revision; explains both immediate and long-term benefits for the classroom community.
