First-Day Shy & Anxious Talker Accommodations
1. Expectant Pause
Wait 5–7 silent seconds with an open smile. Many 3-year-olds need processing time without feeling pressured.
2. Accept Non-Verbal
Pointing, eye gaze, nodding, or holding the object counts as full participation! Voice the word for them: "You found the blocks!"
3. Parallel Talk
Narrate what you are doing rather than interrogating: "I am rolling the red crayon. Wow, it is smooth!" Takes anxiety off the child.
