Lesson 3
Magic Sound Buttons
Learning Objective
Students will use "sound buttons" to tactilely segment CVC words and identify whether the medial sound is /o/ or /u/.
The "Magic Button" Technique
While the Rollercoaster focuses on verticality, Sound Buttons focus on rhythm and physical touch.
The Rule
One tap per sound. The middle button is special because it holds the vowel. We tap it harder or "pop" it!
Instructional Script
1
The Hook
"Look at these magic buttons! They make sounds pop out of words. When we hit the big purple button in the middle, we hear the vowel!"
2
Listen & Distinguish
Say the word POT. Tap the buttons: /p/ - /oooo/ - /t/.
Say the word CUP. Tap the buttons: /k/ - /uuuu/ - /p/.
Ask: "Which button had the round 'O' sound? Which one had the umbrella 'U' sound?"

Lesson 4
Visual Synthesis
Learning Objective
Students will visually and orally connect the beginning, middle, and end sounds of CVC words by assembling three-piece puzzles, focusing on the correct vowel placement.
How it Works
Part 1: Left
The Onset. The beginning sound.
Part 2: Middle
The Vowel. The "Top of the Hill".
Part 3: Right
The Coda. The ending sound.
Facilitation Guide
1
Guided Scaffolding
"I have the pieces for CAT. I have the /k/ and the /t/. But the middle is gone! Which vowel sound goes /aaaa/? Is it the 'A' or the 'I'?"
2
Puzzle Workshop
Students work in pairs or independently.
Task: Give each student 3-5 puzzles mixed up in an envelope. They must assemble the words and then "read" them using the Rollercoaster hand motion once they are built.
Misconception Alert
Some students may try to put two vowels together. Remind them: "Every rollercoaster only has ONE top of the hill!" Check that they have a consonant, a vowel, and a consonant in order.

Lesson 5
Oral Blending
Learning Objective
Students will demonstrate oral blending by synthesizing three phonemes into a whole word and identifying the medial vowel sound.
How to Speak "Robot"
1
The Setup
"I'm going to speak like a robot today. Robots speak very slowly. I'll say the sounds, and you have to tell me the secret word I'm saying!"
2
The Challenge
Say the sounds slowly: /m/ ... /aaaa/ ... /p/.
Wait for students to shout: "MAP!"
Follow-up: "Great! What was the middle sound at the top of the rollercoaster?"

How to Assess:
Say the sounds slowly (1 sound per second). Mark "B" if they can Blend the whole word. Mark "V" if they can identify the Vowel sound at the peak.
