A two-day early literacy sequence for kindergarten and first grade ESL newcomers focusing on letter identification, phonemic awareness, and formation for letters H through M.
2. Kinesthetic TPR: K = gentle soccer kick (/k/), L = finger flashlight pointing up (/l/), M = rub tummy saying "mmmm yummy" (/m/).
3. Board Game Rules Demo (Slide 6): Roll die, count spots, move token, call out letter name & sound to keep spot!
Phonetic Scaffolding: Distinguish lowercase l (straight stick) from capital I. Emphasize continuous /m/ vs stop /k/.
Contrast uppercase M (straight angles) with lowercase m (round arches).
3. PRACTICE ("WE/YOU")
Guided / Solo application
23 min
Part A: Individual Writing & Match (10 min): Students complete Letter Tracks Worksheet (guided tracing of Kk, Ll, Mm, and drawing a line connecting uppercase H-M to lowercase h-m).
Part B: Letter Racers Dice Game (13 min): Students play in pairs with the custom game board and letter/number die. On each turn, the student rolls, moves token, says the letter name and sound. Peer confirms with thumbs-up. Teacher circulates providing 1-on-1 stamp verification.
Peer Coaching: Partner says: "Try again! What is the sound?" If student struggles, partner models sound and student repeats.
Game Variation: When landing on a letter, the student must produce a complete sentence: "L is for lion!"
4. CLOSURE / CFU
Exit ticket check
7 min
H through M Line-Up Rally: Six cards (H, I, J, K, L, M) laid out on the table. Each student picks 2 cards, names them, makes their sounds, and places them in alphabetical order. Teacher records mastery on the small-group tracker.
CFU Criteria: 100% correct identification of target letters K, L, M and 80%+ recall on prior letters H, I, J.
Students blend or say 3 words starting with H, K, and M.
Teacher Reflection
Did the dice game increase active student-to-student oral production? Check whether kindergarten students recognized lowercase l vs capital I in isolation.
Reteach & Support
Students struggling with uppercase/lowercase pairing (H-M) will take home the matching mini-cards and practice 3 minutes daily during morning arrival.
School Events & Reminders

Game Rule: If a player says an incorrect sound, their partner helps them model it, and the player tries once more before passing the turn.
Step-Up Challenge: High flyers must name an additional English word beginning with the landed letter sound before rolling on their next turn!
