Kindergarten Superstars at Work!
| Scaffold: Contrast dramatic rude vs. polite puppet voices with physical smile and open hands.
CFU: Thumbs up/down check for polite vs. impolite requests. | Model responding: "Yes, of course you may!" with a smile. |
| 2. MODEL ("I DO") Direct instruction | 12 min |
Can & May Stems: Model standard kindergarten daily requests using visual slides:
"Can I drink water, please?" • "May I go to the bathroom, please?"
Teacher demonstrates lowercase tails (p, q) hanging below the baseline.
| Scaffold: Color-coded visual word chunks: [Can I] + [Drink water] + [Please?]; tactile letter formation in palm.
CFU: Choral repetition with gesture for question mark (finger curve). | Find words in the room beginning with letters S or T (Scissors, Table). |
| 3. PRACTICE ("WE/YOU") Guided / Solo application | 18 min |
We Do (6 min): Role-play circle with picture cue cards: Teacher holds water picture → Class asks: "Can I drink water, please?" Teacher: "Yes, you may!"
You Do (12 min): Polite Pals Worksheet. Students trace letters N through T, match picture icons to initial letter sounds, and trace the key question frame words "Can I" and "May I" next to classroom routine pictures.
| Scaffold: Provide letter tracing dots; prompt with pointing to sentence frame picture anchors.
CFU: Listen for inclusion of "please" and clear initial consonant pronunciation. | Draw their favorite classroom object starting with letters N–T (e.g., Sun or Ring). |
| 4. CLOSURE / CFU Exit ticket check | 7 min |
"Magic Pass" Exit Ticket: Each student approaches the teacher with a picture card (e.g., sticker, water, bathroom, line up) and says: "May I have a sticker, please?" or "Can I get in line, please?"
Teacher responds: "Yes, you may!" and stamps their hand/worksheet.
| Scaffold: Whisper-coaching starting words ("Can I...") if student feels shy.
CFU: 100% oral production of polite question stem before dismissal. | Help teacher collect crayons by saying "Thank you!" |
Teacher Reflection
Check lowercase p vs. q orientation. Reinforce that "May I..." and "Can I..." are friendly tools to ask for what we need respectfully.
Reteach & Support
For students who drop the pronoun "I" (saying only "Can drink water?"), provide 2-finger rhythmic tapping: [Can] [I] [Drink].
School Events & Reminders
Send home the "Polite Words & Alphabet Star" certificates. Coordinate with general ed kindergarten teachers to reinforce "May I..." during restroom transitions.
