Lesson 1 Teacher Guide Teacher Resource Lesson 1 / 5
Pattern Power & Color Shades
Instructional guide for vocabulary expansion and adjective placement.
Objectives
Identify 4+ fabric patterns.
Distinguish shades (light/dark/navy/mustard).
Apply number-pattern-color order.
Duration
60 Minutes
Materials
• Pattern Power Slides
• Pattern Matcher Worksheet
• Student-brought images
Instructional Steps
1. The Mystery Color Wheel (10 min)
Hook
Students present the photos they brought in. If they don't have one, provide a selection of "street style" magazine clippings.
Teacher Tip: Create a large circle on the whiteboard. Have students tape their images to the circle. Ask: "Is this just 'blue'? No, it's Navy ." This builds a collaborative class color wheel with advanced shades.
2. Direct Instruction (15 min)
Slides
Use Slide 3 to drill pattern names. Ask students to find examples of these patterns in the classroom (on their own clothes, bags, or curtains).
Explain the Order of Style (Slide 4). Emphasize that in English, we describe the design (pattern) before the color.
3. Pattern Matcher Workshop (20 min)
Worksheet
Distribute the worksheet. For Part 4 (The Design Challenge), encourage students to be creative but strict with their sentence structure.
Check for Understanding: Circulate while students reorder sentences. Watch for "a blue striped shirt" vs "a striped blue shirt". (Both are technically okay, but "Pattern + Color" is the taught standard here).
Support: For lower-level beginners, provide a word bank on the board: Striped, Plaid, Polka Dot, Floral, Light, Dark, Navy, Mustard.
Wrap Up (5 min)
"Turn to a partner and describe one thing someone else in the room is wearing. Use one shade and one pattern ."
Differentiation Strategies
Scaffolding
Provide "sentence frames" on the board: "I see a _____ (pattern) _____ (color) _____ (clothing)."
Extension
Ask students to find more complex patterns (e.g., camouflage, herringbone) and search for their names online.
