A good listener is like an editor. You cannot write down everything. In fact, 50% of a lecture is usually non-essential fluff.

A Digression is when a speaker temporarily leaves the main subject to discuss something else.
Why do professors digress?

It meant factories didn't have to be near rivers anymore. They could be anywhere. This led to massive urbanization—people moving from farms to cities—which created a huge labor force but also led to terrible living conditions in the short term.
