The Hook
"Class, I have a friend named Barnaby the Vowel Bot. Barnaby is very confused! He has five houses for his favorite words, but he can only hear the sound right in the middle. Can you help him sort his pictures into the right house?"
Modeling (I Do)
Use a physical prop (puppet or toy) to demonstrate sound isolation.
Hold up a picture of a CAT.
Stretch the word: "c... aaa... t".
Point to your throat or chest when saying the vowel: "I hear /a/ in the middle!"
Place the picture in the 🍎 House A.
Guided Practice (We Do)
Use the following word list for auditory sorting:
/a/: Bat, Mad, Jam
/e/: Hen, Bed, Jet
/i/: Bin, Lip, Sit
/o/: Pot, Hop, Box
/u/: Rug, Mud, Nut
Key Scaffolding Tips
The "Continuous Vowel"
When modeling, elongate the vowel sound (3 seconds) while keeping the pitch steady. Do not add a "schwa" sound to the end.
Visual Cues
Encourage students to look at your mouth. For /o/, show how the mouth makes an "O" shape. For /a/, show the "wide" mouth.
Common Errors
Students often confuse /e/ and /i/. Practice these two side-by-side: PEN vs PIN.

Lesson 2: Continuous Blending

The Concept
Continuous blending (or successive blending) prevents the "memory drop" that happens when students decode sound-by-sound (e.g., saying /k/ /a/ /t/ and then forgetting /k/ by the time they reach /t/).
"We want our sounds to hold hands! Don't let go of the first sound until you are touching the second sound."
Modeling (I Do)
Place a SLED card or write SUN on the board.
Point to 'S' and start the sound: "sssssssss..."
Slide finger to 'U' without stopping the breath: "sssssuuuuuuu..."
Add the final 'N' quickly: "ssssuuunnn... SUN!"
Contrast this with "choppy" reading: "/s/ /u/ /n/" and explain why the sled is better.
Group Routine
The Blending Hill
1 Identify Vowel: "What's our middle sound? /a/."
2 Get Ready: "Get your sleds ready at the top of the hill!"
3 Slide: Model the continuous sound together.
Expert Techniques
Stop Sounds vs. Continuous
Some sounds like /b/, /p/, /t/ are "stop sounds" and can't be held. For these, move to the vowel immediately: "baaaaaat" rather than "b...a...t".
The "Vowel First" Scaffold
If a student struggles, have them say the vowel sound first, then add the onset: "/a/... /ma/... /map/".
Blending Board Setup
Use magnetic letters. Slowly pull the letters together physically as students make the sounds to provide a tactile anchor.

Dictation Script
Pair 1 (a → u)
"The first word is BAG. Stretch it: /b/ /a/ /g/. Build it in the first set of boxes."
"Now, we are going to perform magic! Take away the /a/ and put in a /u/. What is the new word? BUG!"
Pair 2 (i → a)
"The next word is PIN. Stretch it: /p/ /i/ /n/. Write it down."
"Magic time! Change the /i/ to an /a/. What did our pin turn into? A PAN!"
Pair 3 (o → e)
"Last one! Build the word HOT. /h/ /o/ /t/."
"Perform your vowel magic... change the /o/ to an /e/. What word did you make? HET? That's a silly nonsense word!"
Teacher Moves
Circulate: Look for students who are swapping the initial or final sound instead of the medial vowel.
The "Finger Trick": Have students use three fingers (thumb, pointer, middle) to represent the three sounds. Tap the middle finger when discussing the vowel change.
Scaffold: If students struggle with the vowel change, do it on the board with magnetic letters first, physically swapping the tiles.
Mastery Check
"If I have a MAP and I want to make it MOP, which letter do I need to change?"
Bonus Challenge: See if they can find a word where changing the vowel makes a totally different thing you can see in the room (e.g., PAN -> PEN).
