A primary WIDA-aligned speaking and reasoning sequence building foundational partner talk through the themes of Family for Grade 1 and Community for Grade 2.
Step 1 (Think & Circle): Students look at Case 1 & 2 silently for 60 seconds and circle their choice.
Step 2 (Partner 1 Shares): Partner 1 speaks first: "I chose ___ because ___." Partner 2 checks the box.
Step 3 (Switch!): Partner 2 takes their turn for Case 2.
Writing Connection: Students trace/write their key word on the primary blank lines.
Teacher Role: Circulate with the Family Speaking Rubric to record formative language levels.

Allow physical pointing and gesture. Provide bilingual peer support. Echo back full sentences: when student says "Dog!", teacher models: "You help by feeding the dog!"

Guide student to follow the colored path on the talk mat. Prompt for the second half of the sentence: "I chose dinner table because... (what happens at the table?)"
Level 4-5 (Expanding)

Teacher Role: Circulate with the Speaking Rubric clipboard to assess language samples across WIDA levels 1-5.
4 Town Hall Share Out (7 Mins)
Conduct a mock "Town Council" where pairs present differing views: "Marcus chose the community garden, but Sofia chose litter cleanup. How do both make our town stronger?"
5 Peer Debrief & Stars (5 Mins)
Partners rate their discussion using the debrief stars on Page 2 and cut out/exchange the Glow & Grow feedback slip.
Provide realia or photo cards. Accept pointing with single vocabulary words ("Fire truck... siren!"). Provide bilingual sentence strip: "The ___ helps our town." Pair with a supportive bilingual peer.
Level 3 (Developing)
Require the connector because. Have students rehearse verbally before writing. Prompt with function questions: "Who uses this space? What problem does this helper solve?"
Level 4-5 (Expanding)
Encourage comparative conjunctions: "While both the bus and bicycle provide transportation, the bicycle produces no pollution." Challenge students to add two distinct reasons.
Teacher Talk Moves for Community Discussions
When a student says: "I like it better."
Move: "Tell your partner what this helper or place does that helps other people in our neighborhood."
When partners finish quickly:
Move: "Now find a reason why one of the OTHER three choices is the most important for our town!"
