The Safari Journey
1. The Hook (5 mins)
Introduce the Sound Muncher Box.
"Explorers, meet our new friend! He is a Sound Muncher. He is very picky—he only eats things that start with a secret sound. Today, he’s hungry for the sound /m/ . Can you say that sound with me?"
2. Guided Practice (10 mins)
Model auditory isolation using classroom objects.
Hold up a marker . Stretch it: "Mmm-arker. Does it start with /m/? Yes! Muncher hungry!" Feed the box. Hold up a shoe . "Sh-sh-oe. Does that start with /m/? No! Muncher says bleh!"
3. The Sound Hunt (15 mins)
Kinesthetic exploration around the room.
Assign students to find one object in the room. They return to the circle and "present" their object to the Muncher. The class votes: "Munch it!" or "Bleh it!" based on the initial sound.

Support
For students struggling to isolate, use continuous sounds (s, m, f, n, r) which are easier to stretch and hear.
Challenge
Ask students to think of a word that starts with the same sound but is NOT in the room (abstract thinking).

Students will bridge the gap between abstract letter symbols (graphemes) and their sounds (phonemes) by anchoring each sound in a specific physical movement.

Teacher Note
Ensure students are making the pure sound (no 'schwa' sound like 'muh'). Focus on the clipped sound /p/ rather than /puh/.
The "Silent Letter" Challenge
Hold up a letter card but do NOT say the sound. Students must perform the correct action in total silence. This forces them to map the visual symbol directly to the motor memory associated with the sound.

Lesson 3: Alliteration Station • Oral Language Development
The Goal
To develop phonological awareness by identifying and producing strings of words that share the same initial phoneme (alliteration).
The Hook
Read a classic like "Dr. Seuss's ABC" or "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" with an emphasis on the rhythmic alliteration.
The Workshop Flow

Identify the Repetition
Recite simple tongue twisters (e.g., "Peter Piper picked a peck..."). Ask: "What sound do you hear over and over?" Model stretching the initial sound.

Collaborative Creation
Pick a student's name (e.g., "Ben"). Brainstorm words that start like Ben (ball, blue, big, bounce). Put them together: "Big Ben bounces blue balls."

The Sketchpad Mission

Modeling the "Cut"
Demonstrate how to flip through a magazine. "I'm looking for /b/ words. Oh! Here is a ball . I'm going to cut it out carefully." Show the 'small bites' technique with scissors for safety and precision.

The "Check" Station
Before gluing, students must bring their cut-outs to the "Check Station" (you or an assistant). They must name the object and isolate the sound. "This is a dog . /d/ /d/ dog. It goes on the D template!"

Assembly
Students glue their verified pictures onto the large letter template. Encourage them to fill the entire letter space to make it look "decorated."
Scaffolding
Provide a pre-cut bowl of pictures for students with significant fine-motor delays so they can focus purely on the phonemic sorting task.
Extension
Have students label their pictures by writing the initial letter next to the image on their collage.
Display finished collages at eye-level to create a permanent "Student-Made Alphabet Wall."

Lesson 5: Mystery Bag Reveal • Phonemic Clues & Speaking
The Mission
This lesson serves as a cumulative assessment of phonemic isolation. Students must reverse the process: start with an object, identify its initial phoneme, and communicate that sound to others as a "key" to unlock the identity of the object.
The Week Before
Send home a brown paper bag with each student. Instruct parents to help their child find a small object that fits in the bag. The student must keep it a secret! On reveal day, they bring the bag back to school.
