Scaffolding Tips
Remind students to look only at the letter immediately following the C or G.
For "circus" and "central," emphasize that the C makes the /s/ sound, but the rest of the word follows normal phonics rules.
Check for "gymnast" – some students may miss the G-Y connection since it's at the start of the word.

Word Construction Slides Relay Race Edition
Word Construction
Building giant words piece by piece while keeping our Soft Sound Rules in mind.
The Blueprint
Multisyllabic words are built like towers using Prefixes, Roots, and Suffixes.
Example Word:
ex cit ing
Why it matters:
In the word ex-cit-ing, the i in the root makes the C soft!
Mission: Construction Relay
1
Teams line up at the Starting Line.
2
Runner 1 grabs a Root card and races to the construction zone.
3
Runner 2 adds a Prefix or Suffix to build a soft-sound word!
Can you build these?
Construction A
EXCITING
ex + cit + ing
Construction B
DANGEROUS
dan + ger + ous

Relay Setup
Divide the class into teams of 3 or 4.
Place Prefix/Suffix cards at the "Start Line".
Place Root cards at the "Construction Zone" (far wall).
Teams must race to collect the right pieces and assemble the Target Word.
Teacher Tips
"The goal is for students to see how the soft sound root stays the same even when we add other chunks."
Watch For:
Students might forget the 'e' or 'i' marker in the root when focusing on the suffix. Remind them: Keep the code intact!
