The Beast of Loch Ness: Myth or Reality?
Teil 1: Leseverstehen (A2+/B1)
Reading Text: Science Investigates the Highlands Legend
[A] For centuries, rumors of an aquatic behemoth lurking beneath the waters of Loch Ness have intrigued cryptozoologists and tourists alike. Located in the Scottish Highlands, the loch reaches depths exceeding 230 metres and contains more freshwater than all lakes in England and Wales combined. However, because the water is heavily saturated with dark peat from the surrounding moors, visibility drops to near zero just below the surface.
[B] In recent decades, modern scientific research has replaced folklore. In 2018, an international team led by geneticist Professor Neil Gemmell conducted an extensive environmental DNA (eDNA) survey. By filtering hundreds of water samples, researchers gathered microscopic skin, scale, and mucus traces. The genetic sequencing conclusively eliminated the possibility of surviving prehistoric reptiles or sharks, but detected an extraordinary abundance of European eel DNA.
[C] Skeptics maintain that floating logs, thermal waves, and optical illusions easily deceive eyewitnesses in the unpredictable Scottish weather. Nonetheless, sonar operators periodically register large moving underwater contacts that defy easy explanation. Whether the creature is a colossal mutant eel or merely a compelling psychological phenomenon, the mystery remains an undeniable part of Scottish cultural identity.
