5 Minutes
Start with the Slide Deck (Slide 1) . Use the Script to engage students with a warm-up question about encountering new words in books or conversation.
"Has anyone ever been reading and a word popped up that you just didn't understand? Today, we get superpowers to fix that!"

Strategy Spotlight: Context Clues
10 Minutes
Walk through Slides 3-7 . Explain and model the four types of clues: Definitions, Synonyms, Antonyms, and Examples. Model the "Mammal" and "Fragile" examples from the script.
Distribute the Vocabulary Challenge Worksheet . Have students complete #1 and #2 with a partner to check for initial understanding before continuing.

Game On! Scavenger Hunt
10 Minutes
Explain the Scavenger Hunt . Students search for hidden cards around the room. Each card has a sentence with a mystery word.
Teacher Role:
Circulate to help students identify clue types.
Encourage students to verbalize *why* they chose a definition (e.g., "I see the word 'unlike', so it must be an opposite!").

Introduction: What's the Big Word?
[Slide 1] "Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going on a word adventure! Has anyone ever been reading a book or listening to someone talk, and a word popped up that you just didn't understand? It can feel a little confusing, right?"
(Wait for student responses. Encourage 2-3 brief shares about "big words.")
[Slide 2] "Well, today we're going to get some superpowers to help us with those tricky words, especially the ones we find in our school subjects, like science, history, or even math! These are called academic vocabulary words. They're important because they help us understand big ideas and become super smart readers and writers. Our goal today is to learn how to figure out what new words mean using special clues. Let's power up our vocabulary!"

Strategy Spotlight: Context Clues
[Slide 3] "Our first superpower is called context clues ! Who can tell me what a 'clue' is?"
(Listen for "hints" or "evidence.")
"Exactly! Clues are hints! And context clues are hints that the author leaves right in the sentence or paragraph to help us understand difficult words. It's like being a word detective and finding the secret meaning!"
[Slide 4] Definition Clues
"Sometimes, the author is super helpful and just tells us what the word means, right there in the sentence! For example: 'A mammal is an animal that breathes air, has a backbone, and grows hair.' The sentence tells us right away!"
[Slide 5] Synonym Clues
"A synonym is a word that means the same thing. Think about this: 'The ancient artifact was fragile , or easily broken.' What does 'fragile' mean? That's right, 'easily broken.' The word 'or' gave us a great hint!"
[Slide 6] Antonym Clues
"An antonym is the opposite . Look at this: 'Unlike his garrulous sister, who rarely stopped talking, John was quite quiet.' If John is quiet, and his sister is unlike him, she must be talkative!"
[Slide 7] Example Clues
"The sentence might give us examples. 'The restaurant served many types of beverages , such as juice, water, and milk.' The examples tell us they are drinks!"

Preparation
Print & Cut: Print Page 2 of this document. It contains 8 "Mission Cards." Cut them out.Hide the Clues: Tape the cards around the classroom. Some should be easy to find, others hidden behind books or near posters.Assemble Teams: Divide students into pairs or groups of three.Briefing: Distribute the Response Sheets (Page 3) to each team.
Rules of Engagement
Teams must walk (not run) through the room.
When a card is found, teams must use context clues to define the bold word.
Teams must NOT remove the cards from their locations.
The team with the most accurate definitions wins the "Master Detective" title.
Facilitator Notes
While students are searching, walk around and prompt them to look for "trigger words" like or , but , or such as .
If a team finishes early, challenge them to identify the type of context clue used for each card (Definition, Synonym, Antonym, or Example).
