Sound Smashers Lesson Plan
Phonemic Segmentation Fluency (PSF) • CVC Spoken Words
Focus Standard CCSS RF.K.2.D
Content Objective
Students will segment spoken 3-phoneme CVC words into individual sounds in correct sequence (e.g., /s/ /u/ /n/).
Language Objective
Using tactile sound chips and arm-tap gestures, students will orally pronounce each isolated phoneme without adding a schwa sound.
Key Materials
- Sound Box Activity Mats
- Play-Doh balls or 3 plastic chips
- 6 Realia/Picture Cards (Sun, Cat, Mop...)
- Segmentation Quick Check Sheet
ESL & Multilingual Scaffolding Strategies WIDA Levels 1–3
1. Visual Anchors: Always pair the target spoken word with a picture card so vocabulary barriers don't block sound segmentation.
2. TPR Arm-Tapping: Tap shoulder (sound 1), elbow (sound 2), and wrist (sound 3) to physically map phonemes across the body.
3. Continuous Sounds: Begin with stretchy continuants (/m/, /s/, /f/) before transitioning to quick stop sounds (/t/, /p/, /k/).

1 Warm-Up & Sound Echo Safari
0:00 – 0:05 (5 mins)
Goal & Focus
Awaken listening ears. Isolate starting sounds before full 3-phoneme segmentation.
Gesture: Hand behind ear to listen!
Teacher Script & Actions:
Teacher: "Put on your sound explorer glasses! (curl fingers like binoculars). Words are built out of little sound blocks. Listen to my sound and echo: /m/… /m/… /m/."
Students: Echo sound 3 times, matching lip shape. Teacher models with exaggerated mouth shape for ESL learners.
Repeat with /s/ (snake hand) and /t/ (tapping tongue behind teeth). "Now let's stretch a whole word like a warm rubber band!"
2 "I Do" – Direct Modeling with the Magic Sound Slide
0:05 – 0:13 (8 mins)
Model 1: Continuous Word ("SUN")
1. Hold up picture of a smiling SUN. "What is this? Yes, sun! /s/ /u/ /n/."
2. Show oversized teacher Elkonin box (Green, Yellow, Red boxes).
3. Teacher Script: "Watch my finger slide. First sound goes in the green box: /s/. Middle sound in yellow: /u/. Last sound in red: /n/."
Notice: I don't say 'suh-uh-nuh'. I make crisp, clean sounds: /s/ /u/ /n/!
Model 2: Stop Sound Word ("CAT")
1. Display picture of CAT.
2. Introduce the Arm Tap Strategy:
- Touch shoulder: /k/
- Touch inside elbow: /æ/ (open mouth wide like biting an apple)
- Touch wrist: /t/ (light puff of air)
3. Count on fingers: "1, 2, 3 sounds! How many sounds in cat? Exactly three sounds!"

Part II: Practice & Assessment
3 "We Do" – Hands-On Play-Doh Sound Smash
0:13 – 0:20 (7 mins)
Multisensory Setup: Students have Sound Box Mats + 3 Play-Doh balls (or chips).
Word 1: BUG
Show bug image. "Say bug!" Together smash ball 1: /b/, ball 2: /u/, ball 3: /g/.
Word 2: MOP
Mimic mopping floor. "Say mop!" Roll 3 balls. Smash down palm: /m/, /o/, /p/.
Word 3: NET
Show butterfly net. Push chips forward into colored boxes while vocalizing: /n/, /e/, /t/.
ESL Formative Check: Circulate to check for mouth positioning. Provide immediate non-verbal mirror modeling if a student substitutes Spanish /o/ for English short /u/.
4 "You Do" – Touch & Tap Partner Relay
0:20 – 0:25 (5 mins)
Structured Partner Roles:
- Partner A (Speaker): Flips a picture card (e.g., Pig), names it aloud, and taps the arm: /p/ /i/ /g/.
- Partner B (Checker): Listens, pushes the 3 sound chips on the mat, and gives a two-thumbs-up if 3 clear sounds were made.
- Switch roles after 2 cards.
Sentence Frame for English Learners:
"The word is ____. The sounds are / /, / /, / /!"
Allows emerging speakers to participate confidently with predictable language.
5 Quick Check & Celebration Closure
0:25 – 0:30 (5 mins)
Formative Assessment Routine:
Administer the 1-page Sound Segmenting Quick Check individually or in small triads. Present target CVC picture (e.g., BAT). Say: "Tell me all the sounds in bat."
✓ Scoring: Mark 1 point per correct phoneme isolated within 3 seconds (3/3 = Mastered).
Closing Sound Cheer:
Gather circle. Whisper-cheer: "Break it down, sound by sound, we're the best sound smashers in town!" High-fives on all 3 beats.
Targeted ESL Differentiation By Proficiency Level
WIDA 1 (Entering / Newcomer)
Start with 2-phoneme words (in, up, on). Use hand-over-hand tactile guidance on Play-Doh balls. Allow student to point to visual boxes while teacher voices sounds, then echo.
WIDA 2–3 (Emerging / Developing)
Standard 3-phoneme CVC words with continuous initial consonants (man, run, sat). Prompt self-correction: "Listen: did you hear /s/ or /suh/?" Use arm-tap anchor.
WIDA 4+ / Fluent Extension
Introduce 4-phoneme words with initial or final blends (stop = /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/, hand = /h/ /a/ /n/ /d/). Have students segment without physical manipulatives.
Critical Pitfall Alerts for Kindergarten ESL Instructors
1. The "Schwa" Addition: Many students say "/buh/" instead of crisp "/b/". Cue students: "Clip it short! Don't let your mouth add an extra sound."
2. Rhyme / Onset-Rime Confusion: Students may segment "c-at" rather than "/k/ /æ/ /t/". Use the 3 separate physical boxes to enforce 3 separate sounds.

Proficiency Levels & Cut Scores
Mastered (Benchmark) 13–15 pts
Rapidly segments all 3 phonemes without hesitation. Ready for CCVC/CVCC blends.
Emerging (Strategic) 9–12 pts
Segments first and last sounds; occasional struggle isolating medial short vowel.
Needs Support (Intensive) 0–8 pts
Blends or states onset-rime (b-at). Needs 2-phoneme words and tactile Play-Doh support.
ESL Instructional Action Plan (Check All That Apply): Small Group Grouping
Review continuous initial sounds (/m/, /s/, /f/, /n/)
Provide small pocket mirror for vowel lip shape
Reinforce unvoiced stops to eliminate schwa (/t/ not /tuh/)
Continue 3-box Elkonin mat with physical chips
