Objective
Students will be able to differentiate between short and long vowel sounds and identify long vowel sounds in CVCe words.
Why This Matters
Understanding long vowel sounds is a foundational reading skill that helps students decode words, improve pronunciation, and build confidence in reading and writing.
Preparation (10 mins)
- Review Long Vowel Power Slides and Teacher Script.
- Print and cut out picture cards for the Sound Sort Activity.
- Prepare copies of Practice Sheet for each student.
- Ensure projector/whiteboard is ready.

Instructional Sequence

Warm-Up: Vowel Sound Review
5 mins
Begin with the Vowel Sound Warm-Up to review short vowel sounds. Ask students to make the short vowel sounds they already know (a, e, i, o, u).
Introduce the idea that vowels can sound like their names!

Introduce Long Vowel Sounds
10 mins
Use the Long Vowel Power Slides. Follow the Teacher Script to explain that long vowels "say their name." Focus on CVCe words and the "Magic E" that gives power to the vowel.

Interactive Vowel Sort Activity
10 mins
Distribute picture cards. Students sort pictures into "Short Vowel" and "Long Vowel" categories. Circulate and support.
Students can work in pairs to discuss the sounds they hear.

Worksheet Practice
5 mins
Hand out the Practice Sheet. Guide the first few examples (e.g., Bike vs. Pig). Have students circle the correct vowel sound based on what they hear.

Cool-Down: Share a Word
2 mins
Ask each student to share one word they remember with a long vowel sound. This is a quick "ticket out" for assessment.

Warm-Up: Vowel Sound Review (5 mins)
"Good morning, everyone! Let's get our ears ready for some amazing sounds today. We know that vowels are super special letters: A, E, I, O, U! Can everyone say those with me?"
Wait for student response (A, E, I, O, U)
"Fantastic! Now, we've learned that vowels can make short sounds, like the 'a' in 'cat' (/ă/). Can you all make the short 'a' sound with me? /ă/, /ă/, /ă/!"
Guide students through short 'e' (bed), short 'i' (pig), short 'o' (dog), and short 'u' (sun).
"You are all sound experts! But guess what? Vowels have a secret! Sometimes they don't make their short sound. Sometimes, they like to say their very own name!"

Introduce Long Vowel Sounds (10 mins)
ADVANCE TO SLIDE 1
"Look at our first slide! It says 'Long Vowel Power!'. Today we're going to learn about long vowel sounds."
ADVANCE TO SLIDE 2
"When a vowel says its own name, like A, E, I, O, U, it's a LONG vowel sound! Can you say your name? Just like you say your name, sometimes vowels say their name."
"And guess what? Sometimes there's a magic letter at the end of a word that makes the first vowel say its name. It's usually a silent 'e'! It's like a superhero 'e' that gives the first vowel its power!"
ADVANCE TO SLIDE 3 (LONG A)
"Let's look at Long A! Listen carefully: C-A-K-E! Do you hear the 'A' saying its name? 'Aaaaaa'! The magic 'e' at the end makes it say 'A'. Can you say 'cake' with me?"
Repeat for Slides 4-7: Emphasize the vowel sound and point to the "Magic E" on the slides. For Long E, explain it often comes in pairs like "ee".

Sound Sort Activity (10 mins)

"You are doing an amazing job! Now, it's time for you to be sound detectives. I have some picture cards here. Your job is to sort them! If you hear the vowel saying its name, it's a long vowel. If it's a short, quick sound, it's a short vowel."
Distribute Picture Cards
"Work with a partner to sort these pictures. I'll be walking around to help. Remember, listen very carefully to the vowel sound!"

Practice & Cool-Down (7 mins)
Distribute Practice Sheet
"Look at the first picture. It's a 'bike'. Do you hear the 'I' saying its name? B-I-K-E. Yes! Circle 'long I'. Now try the next one on your own."
