Objectives

Instructional Steps
1 Hook: Stand Up, Sit Down (10 mins)
Explain: "Detectives, we are hunting for a special 'gliding' sound. It's the sound you hear in 'BOY' or 'COIL'. Listen: /oi/. Your mouth moves from an /o/ shape to an /ee/ shape!"
Read the following list. Students stand if they hear /oi/ and sit if they don't: Toy, Boat, Coin, Cloud, Join, Cow, Boil, Bowl.
2 Direct Instruction: Mouth Formation (5 mins)
Model the /oi/ diphthong. Have students watch each other's mouths. Explain that /oi/ is a "vowel team" sound that glides.
3 Guided Practice: Sound Mapping (15 mins)
Use the Sound Mapping Worksheet. Say a word, have students repeat it, tap the sounds, and then mark the box where the /oi/ sound lives (beginning, middle, or end).

Differentiation

Investigation Steps
1 The Hook: Mystery Envelopes (10 mins)
"Detectives, yesterday we found the /oi/ sound. Today, we have a visual mystery. I have envelopes full of /oi/ words, but they are spelled two different ways. Your mission is to find the secret rule!"
Distribute envelopes containing the word cards to small groups or pairs.
2 The Sort: Investigation Report (20 mins)
Students sort cards into two columns on their desks: oi and oy . As they sort, ask them to look closely at where the letters are in the word.
Students then complete the "Investigation Report" by recording their words and writing their hypothesis.
3 The Discovery: Creating the Rule (15 mins)
Bring the class back together. Ask: "Where do we see oy most of the time?" (The end). "Where do we see oi ?" (The middle).
The Detective Rule:
Use OI in the middle of a word. Use OY at the very end!
Teaching Tip
If students struggle to see the pattern, have them highlight the oi or oy in each word card with a bright marker before sorting.

The Loyal Cowboy's Quest
Once there was a loyal cowboy named Roy. Roy lived on a ranch with his favorite boy, Troy. They loved to work in the soil and enjoy the fresh air.
One day, Troy heard a loud noise near the well. He was pointing at a shiny coin stuck in the mud. "Look, Roy!" he cried. "I found a gold coin!"
Roy did not want the coin to spoil. He wrapped it in some silver foil to keep it safe. It was a tough choice, but they decided to find the owner.
