Teacher says: "Good morning, future Word Detectives! Welcome to our special decoding session. We're here today to sharpen our skills at unlocking tricky words. To start, I want you to think for a moment: When you're reading and you come across a word you don't know, what's the very first thing you usually do? How do you try to figure it out?"
Teacher says: "That's a great strategy! Today, we're going to learn even more ways to become super word detectives. We'll use special clues to break down unfamiliar words. For example, look at the word 'unhappy'. If you didn't know it, what part of the word looks familiar? How does knowing what 'un-' means help you figure out the word?"

Teacher says: "Excellent! You're already thinking like detectives. Now, let's look at our Decoding Dynamos Slides to review our main clues. Our goal today is to apply our knowledge of letter sounds, syllable patterns, and word parts like prefixes and suffixes to read and write words we haven't seen before."

"Our first clue, and perhaps the most basic, is letter sounds . We know that every letter or combination of letters makes a sound. Let's quickly review the main vowel sounds – both short and long – and some common consonant blends and digraphs. This is our foundation!" (Briefly review sounds, asking students to choral respond to a few examples.)

"Our second powerful clue is syllables . Words are often made of smaller, pronounceable chunks called syllables. Each syllable usually has one vowel sound. We can break down big words into smaller, easier-to-read parts. Let's look at some common syllable division patterns: VCCV, VCV, and VC/V. For example, if I have the word 'fantastic,' how many vowel sounds do you hear? Let's clap it out: fan-tas-tic! Three syllables! Can you try 'remember' with me?"
