Beat Buddy Teacher Guide Beat Buddy Guide
Lesson 1
Theme: Discovering the Steady Beat
Objective
Students will identify and replicate a steady pulse using their hands and feet in response to a drum beat.
Materials
Hand drum or tambourine
"Heartbeat" Student Sheet
Upbeat instrumental music
Instructional Steps
1
The Heartbeat Hook
Ask: "Can you feel your heart go thum-thump?" Have students place hands on chests. Explain that a beat is like a heartbeat for music—it stays the same and never stops!
2
Echo My Beat
Teacher plays a steady pulse on the drum. Students clap along. Switch to tapping knees, then tapping heads. Use the phrase: "Keep the beat, in your feet, keep the beat, it's so sweet!"
3
Beat Detectives
Play a song with a strong 4/4 pulse. Ask students to "find the beat" by nodding their heads. Once everyone is nodding together, add a clap.
Teacher Tips
Support: For students struggling to find the beat, provide a physical cue like holding their hands and clapping together.
Challenge: Ask students to close their eyes and only clap when they hear the drum beat change.

Lesson 2
Theme: Marching in Time & Locomotor Skills
Objective
Students will synchronize their walking/marching steps with a steady auditory beat provided by a drum or song.
Materials
Snare drum or loud tambourine
"Parade Path" tracing worksheet
Suggested Song: "The Ants Go Marching" or "Stars and Stripes Forever"
Movement Sequence
1
Stationary Marching
Have students stand in their own "personal space bubble." Start a slow, steady drum beat. Challenge them to march in place, lifting knees to waist height. Accentuate the "1" with a louder hit.
2
Follow the Leader
Form a line. Teacher acts as the Drum Major. March around the perimeter of the room. Chant: "Left, Left, Left, Right, Left" or simply "Step, Step, Step, Step."
3
Tempo Challenge
Speed up the drum slightly. Can the parade keep up? Then slow it down dramatically. Emphasize "Slow Motion" marching to help with balance and control.
Checking for Understanding
"Is our parade moving fast or slow right now?"
"Are your feet landing at the same time as my drum?"
"What happens to our bodies when the music gets faster?"

Lesson 3
Theme: Fast & Slow (Tempo Recognition)
Objective
Students will demonstrate the ability to adjust their movement speed (tempo) in immediate response to auditory cues.
Materials
Instrument with variable speed (Drum, Piano, or App)
"Fast or Slow?" Sorting Sheet
Audio clips: "Flight of the Bumblebee" (Fast) vs. "Gymnopédie No. 1" (Slow)
Classroom Activities
1
Animal Mimicry
Introduce "Snail Speed" and "Cheetah Speed." Have students move across the carpet. When you tap the drum quickly, they are cheetahs. When you tap slowly, they are snails.
2
Tempo Train
Students link shoulders or stand in a line. Start the "train" moving slowly ("Chug... chug..."). Gradually increase the drum speed until the train is "zooming" down the tracks.
3
The Musical Seesaw
Play two contrasting songs. Ask students to describe them: "Is this bunny music or turtle music?" Transition between the two and have them switch their dance style instantly.
Fast
Quick, energetic, jumping, running, racing.
Slow
Calm, stretching, floating, heavy, careful.

Lesson 4
Theme: Impulse Control & Auditory Attention
Objective
Students will practice immediate inhibition of movement in response to the cessation of music, building impulse control and listening skills.
Materials
Upbeat music playlist with clear start/stop
"Statue Pose" Drawing Sheet
A "Stop" sign (red octagon) and "Go" sign (green circle)
Game Variations
1
Classic Freeze Dance
Explain the rules: Music ON = Dance. Music OFF = Freeze. Start with long music segments, then make the "freezes" shorter and more frequent to test their focus.
2
Animal Freeze
Give a prompt before the music starts: "This time, dance like a wobbly penguin!" or "Dance like a wiggly noodle!" When the music stops, they must freeze in that specific character.
3
The Statue Museum
Once frozen, the teacher (The Night Watchman) walks through the "museum" to see if any statues move. If a student giggles or wobbles, they have to do a silly 5-second "wiggle out" before joining back in.
Skill Focus: Self-Regulation
Help students understand that freezing is about controlling our muscles . Ask: "How did you tell your legs to stop moving so fast?" and "Was it hard to stay still when you wanted to keep dancing?"

Lesson 5
Theme: Pattern Replication & Sequencing
Objective
Students will memorize and replicate short rhythmic patterns (2-4 beats) using claps, stomps, and knee pats.
Materials
"Rhythm Echo" Worksheet
Metronome or steady drum beat (optional)
Visual symbols (Hands for clap, Feet for stomp)
Instructional Steps
1
Sound Exploration
Introduce the 3 "Body Drums": The Hand (Clap), The Foot (Stomp), and the Thigh (Pat). Let students explore the different sounds they make.
2
The Echo Game
Teacher: "My turn!" (Clap-Clap). Students: "Our turn!" (Clap-Clap). Gradually increase difficulty: Stomp-Clap, Stomp-Clap-Pat, etc. Emphasize the silence between patterns.
3
The Pattern Loop
Create a 4-beat loop (e.g., Stomp, Clap, Stomp, Clap). Keep it going for 30 seconds. Help students "feel" the repetitive nature of the pattern.
Checking Progress
"Can you remember what sound came after the clap?"
"Let's try to do our pattern faster! Ready?"
"Who can lead the class in a new 2-beat pattern?"
