Instructional guide to accompany the Decoding Emotions Slides

1 Slide 1: Introduction

"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Today, we're going to talk about something really important: our emotions and mental well-being. This is a topic that affects all of us, and it's essential that we understand it better. My goal today is to create a safe space where we can learn and talk openly. There are no silly questions, and your feelings are always valid."

2 Slide 2: What Are Emotions?

"Before we dive deep, let's start with a quick check-in. (Refer to the Warm-Up here). Now, let's think about emotions in general. We all experience a huge range of feelings, right? Joy, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, disgust – these are just a few examples. Can anyone give me another example of an emotion you've felt recently?"

[ WAIT FOR STUDENT RESPONSES ]

"Exactly! Emotions are like messages our body sends us, telling us how we're reacting to situations. They're a normal, healthy part of being human, and they tend to come and go, almost like waves in the ocean. Sometimes they're big, sometimes they're small, but they always pass."

3 Slide 3: When Feelings Become More...

"It’s totally normal to feel sad after a bad day, or nervous before a big test or presentation. We all get those butterflies, or feel a bit down. But what if those feelings of sadness or worry don't go away? What if they start to stick around for a really long time, day after day, week after week? And what if they start to make it really hard to do the things you normally enjoy, like hanging out with friends, playing sports, or focusing in class? This is when feelings might become something more significant, and it's important to recognize the difference."

4 Slide 4: What is Anxiety?

"Let's talk about anxiety. We've all felt nervous or worried. But anxiety, as a mental health condition, is different. It’s when worry, fear, or nervousness becomes overwhelming and constant. It’s like your body is stuck in 'fight or flight' mode, even when there's no real danger around. Imagine your alarm system going off constantly, even when there's no fire."

"Some common symptoms of anxiety include a racing heart, sweating, feeling shaky, having trouble sleeping, or finding it hard to concentrate. It can make you want to avoid situations that trigger these feelings, like speaking in class or going to social events. When anxiety is really impacting your daily life, it might be a sign of an anxiety disorder."

5 Slide 5: What is Depression?

"Now, let's look at depression. This is more than just feeling sad for a day or two. Depression is a persistent feeling of sadness, a loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy, or a general feeling of hopelessness. It can make everything feel heavy, like you're carrying a weight around, and you might lose your energy for even simple tasks."

"Some common symptoms include feeling persistently sad, changes in your sleep patterns (sleeping too much or too little), changes in eating habits, feeling very tired, feelings of worthlessness, or difficulty making decisions. It can make it hard to get out of bed, go to school, or enjoy your hobbies. If these feelings last for more than two weeks and significantly impact your life, it could be depression."

6 Slide 6: It's Not Your Fault

"This is a really important slide. I want everyone to hear this clearly: Anxiety and depression are common medical conditions. They are just like asthma or diabetes – they are real health issues. They are NOT a sign of weakness, and they are NOT something you can just 'snap out of' by trying harder. If you break your arm, you don't just 'snap out of it,' you get help. Mental health works similarly. The really good news is that both anxiety and depression are treatable!"

7 Slide 7: Healthy Ways to Cope

"While professional help is often important, there are also many healthy ways we can cope with tough feelings every day. First, talk it out. Share with a trusted friend or adult. Move your body! Exercise can boost your mood. Get enough sleep and eat well – fueling your body impacts how you feel mentally. Mindfulness, relaxation, and hobbies are also great tools. What are some other ways you cope?"

8 Slide 8: Who Can Help?

"Sometimes feelings are too big to handle alone, and that's okay. Who are some trusted adults you could talk to?"

"Excellent suggestions. School counselors are specifically trained to help you. Reaching out is a sign of courage, not weakness."

9 Slide 9: Wrap Up

"You are not alone. Many people your age experience these feelings. Asking for help is a sign of strength. Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health. Please take a few minutes to complete your exit ticket. Thank you for being so open today."
