Distinguishing Definite vs. Indefinite Articles

Objective
Students will be able to distinguish between definite (the ) and indefinite (a , an ) articles by identifying and labeling classroom objects in specific and non-specific contexts.

Article:
Little words (a, an, the) that introduce a noun.
Definite (The):
Used for something specific, special, or unique.
Indefinite (A/An):
Used for "any old" object that isn't specific.

Hold up a standard yellow pencil from a pile.
"If I say 'Give me a pencil,' does it matter which one you give me? What if I hold this one special pencil with the sparkly eraser and say 'Give me the pencil'? What's the difference?"

Students work in pairs with a pile of classroom items (crayons, blocks, markers).
Step 1: Indefinite
"Partner, please give me a crayon." (Partner gives any crayon).
Step 2: Definite
"Partner, please give me the blue crayon with the broken tip." (Partner must find that specific one).

Students draw two pictures. One must be "an apple" (generic) and the other "the apple" (must have a specific detail like a worm, a sticker, or a bite taken out).
Common Misconceptions
A vs. An: Students often forget "an" is for vowel sounds. Remind them that "an" is like a "buffer" for the voice.Overusing "The": Students might think everything is specific. Remind them: if there are 10 identical red pens, "the red pen" still doesn't work unless you point to one!
Differentiation
