(Guess: Why do you like ice cream?) "Under my bed." (Guess: Where is your shoe?) Point: Without the "echo," the reader is guessing. 10 MIN I Do: Cross-Out & Carry 1. Identify: Find Who, What, Why, How, etc. 2. Cross-Out: Strike them out! 3. Carry: Use the leftovers to start the sentence. Model: "Where does a cat sleep?" → Cross "Where does" → "A cat sleeps..." 10 MIN We Do: Guided Echoes Display questions on slides. Students use whiteboards to: Highlight question words they would remove. Write the Echo Starter. Flip "you" to "I". (e.g., "What did you see?" → "I saw...") 15 MIN You Do: Independent Practice Students work on the Echo Practice Worksheet. Check for: Accurate sentence starters matching the prompt. Verb tense changes (e.g., "did eat" → "ate"). Teacher Lookout! The "Because" Trap Don't let them start with "Because". It's a connector, not a starter!
