Unit Objective
Students will use models to explain the relationship between changes in thermal energy in a substance and the motion of its particles, specifically during phase changes.
Day 1: Speedy Particles
Focus
Kinetic Molecular Theory basics. Connection between temperature (thermal energy) and particle speed.
Agenda (40 min)
00-05: Hook: Food coloring in hot vs. cold water demo.
05-20: Direct Instruction (Slides 1-8).

35-40: Exit Ticket: Draw a "hot" vs "cold" gas.
Day 2: Phase Shift
Focus
Phase changes: Melting, Freezing, Vaporization, Condensation. Why energy is needed to break attractions.

05-20: Direct Instruction (Slides 9-16).

Teaching Tips
Misconception Alert! Students often think particles themselves grow or shrink. Emphasize that only the *space* and *speed* change.
Kinesthetic Idea Have students stand up and "vibrate" for solids, "shuffle" for liquids, and "run" for gases.

Why do we need energy?
