Ecosystems & Indigenous Adaptations of North America

Field Observation: Humans as Part of the Web

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with their physical environment. For thousands of years, North America's Indigenous peoples did not live "on top of" nature, but directly within its systems. By studying the relationships between native plants, animals, and geography, communities developed sophisticated methods of resource management that preserved ecological balance—ensuring that resources would remain renewable for future generations.

Region I

The Pacific Northwest: Rivers & Rain Forests

Along the rugged, misty coastline spanning from modern-day Oregon up to Alaska, temperate rainforests meet the cold Pacific Ocean. Here, the landscape is defined by two keystone elements: the giant Western Red Cedar and the migrating Pacific Salmon.

To the Coast Salish, Haida, and Tlingit nations, the Red Cedar is known as the "Mother of the People." Rather than simply cutting down these ancient giants (which can live for over a thousand years), builders developed sustainable harvesting techniques. They would split long planks from living trees or carefully peel strips of the inner bark. The bark was then woven into waterproof clothing, mats, and baskets, while the tree healed and continued to grow.

The cedar’s light, rot-resistant wood was used to carve massive seafaring canoes, totem poles, and plank houses. By utilizing living trees, these communities practiced an early form of forest conservation.

Ecosystem Spotlight

The Salmon Cycle: Salmon are anadromous—hatching in rivers, migrating to the ocean to mature, and returning to rivers to spawn and die.

Their decaying bodies deposit ocean-nutrients deep into the forest, fertilizing the giant cedars. In return, cedar roots stabilize riverbanks, preventing erosion and keeping spawning pools clean.

Sustainable Fisheries Management

Indigenous communities constructed complex reef nets and river fish weirs (wooden fence-like structures) to capture salmon. Crucially, these weirs were designed to be temporary or had built-in escape routes. This allowed a substantial percentage of migrating fish to pass unharmed upriver to spawn, ensuring the salmon population remained stable and renewable year after year. Tidal stone traps were also built, trapping fish at high tide but allowing smaller, young fish to swim free.

Region II

The Great Plains: Grasslands & Fire

The Great Plains is a vast interior grassland stretching from Canada to Texas, characterized by hot summers, cold winters, and low rainfall. The dominant native species here was the Bison (American Buffalo), a classic keystone species.

Bison herds migrating across the plains grazed on native grasses, recycling nutrients via manure, and churning up the soil with their hooves, which allowed new wildflower and grass seeds to germinate. Nations such as the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Comanche developed a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle centered entirely on the bison.

Every single part of the bison was utilized: meat for food, hides for thick winter robes and tepee covers, bones for digging tools, and sinew for strong bowstrings. By relying on a migrating animal, Plains tribes moved with the seasons, preventing localized overhunting and allowing vegetation time to recover.

Cultural Burning Practices

Plains tribes actively managed the grass ecosystem through cultural burns—controlled, low-intensity forest and grassland fires. These burns cleared away dead plant debris, returned nutrients like carbon to the soil, and stimulated the growth of fresh, sweet green shoots that attracted bison back to specific grazing grounds.

Region III

The Southwest: Arid Adaptations

Oases in the Dirt

The Hohokam people engineered over 500 miles of sophisticated clay-lined canals that carried water from major rivers into desert farming plots, growing maize, beans, and squash in a region with less than 10 inches of annual rain.

The desert southwest—inhabited by communities like the Tohono O'odham, Hopi, and Ancestral Puebloans—is a land of extreme heat and limited water. In this hyper-arid environment, water conservation and deep plant knowledge were essential for survival.

Rather than trying to force the desert to become wet, these groups worked with drought-tolerant desert plants. The Saguaro Cactus, which holds massive amounts of water in its fibrous tissue, provided sweet red fruit that was harvested using long poles made from fallen saguaro ribs.

The tough, fibrous Yucca plant was another vital resource. Indigenous craftspeople harvested its sharp leaves, pounded out the tough fibers, and twisted them into strong cords used to weave sandals, baskets, and mats.
