The primary objective of this lesson is to move students beyond identifying "bad arguments" based on tone or truthfulness (informal) and toward recognizing errors in validity —where the conclusion does not logically follow from the premises, regardless of the truth of those premises (formal).

Teacher Key: House B is the Formal Fallacy. The 'math' of the design is broken. Even with perfect materials (true facts), the house will fall. House A is an Informal Fallacy. The design is fine, but the materials (facts/relevance) are bad.

Detectives often fall into the Result Trap during investigations.
"If the suspect was at the crime scene (P), their DNA would be on the door handle (Q). We found their DNA on the handle (Q). Therefore, they were at the crime scene during the murder (P)."
Why this is an error:
The DNA could have been left there before the crime occurred. There are alternative explanations for Q.

2. Logical Explanation: They should explain that while a tumor (P) causes a headache (Q), a headache (Q) can be caused by dozens of other things (dehydration, stress, light, lack of sleep).
3. Danger Assessment: The student should note that assuming the most extreme cause (P) without ruling out others leads to medical waste, unnecessary stress, or missing the actual cause of the pain.

Ads imply that if you don't buy the product, you won't get the benefit. But the logic doesn't hold.

"If we raise taxes (P), the economy will crash (Q). We won't raise taxes (Not P). Therefore, the economy won't crash (Not Q)."
The Reality:
Economies crash for many reasons besides taxes (oil prices, bank failures, pandemics).

Advertisers and politicians love the fallacy of Denying the Antecedent . They create a rule (If P, then Q) and then tell you that if you avoid P, you are safe from Q (or if you don't do P, you won't get Q). Your job is to audit these three "Guarantees" and find the logical structural flaw.
Audit Case 01: Tech Support STATUS: SUSPECT
The Script:
"Sir, the policy states that if you submerge this watch in salt water (P), the battery will fail (Q). You told me you have never put the watch in salt water (Not P). Therefore, your battery cannot be failing (Not Q). Your request for a refund is denied."

A Classic Syllogism

The "bridge" (Black and White) is shared, but it doesn't mean the two groups are the same.

The "Undistributed" Middle
What is "Distribution"?
A term is distributed if it refers to every member of its category. If the middle term isn't distributed at least once, the argument fails.
"Shared traits do not equal shared identity."
Spot the Error:
"All mammals are warm-blooded. All birds are warm-blooded. Therefore, all birds are mammals."
The Middle Term:
Warm-blooded
Does 'warm-blooded' only belong to mammals? No. It's a larger circle containing both groups separately.

Students will often say this argument is "Good" because they know Einstein was a genius. You must hammer home that logic is about the path, not the destination.
"If you use this logic, you'd also have to accept that 'The guy down the street who talks to fire hydrants (Eccentric) is a Genius.' Because the bridge (eccentricity) doesn't guarantee the connection (genius), the structure is broken, even if it happens to point to a true fact in one specific case."

The Middle Term (M) is 'distributed' in premise 2 because it refers to the entire category of M.
Invalid (Undistributed):
