Video: Will, Won't, and Might
Watch the video. Use the specific pause points noted in the slides to engage students in voting with hand signals.
20 min
Activity: The Mystery Bag
Students work in pairs or small groups. They predict, pull a counter, record the result, and return the counter to the bag.
Activity Setup & Prep
Mystery Bag Composition
Prepare each opaque bag with a specific mix to guarantee certain discussions:
Recommended Mix
- • 10 Red Counters (Might)
- • 2 Blue Counters (Might)
- • 0 Green Counters (Won't)
Key Observation
Students should notice they pull red much more often than blue, even though both "might" happen.
Discussion Starters
After the Video:
"Why did we say the teacher giving a test 'might' happen instead of 'will' happen? Do they give a test every single day?"
During the Activity:
"Before you pull, say your sentence: 'I MIGHT get red' or 'I WON'T get a dinosaur.' Why won't you get a dinosaur?"
During Closure:
"If I put 100 yellow blocks in this bag and only 1 blue block, is it still possible to get blue? Is it more likely or less likely than before?"
