This workshop-style sequence for 8th Grade students focuses on misplaced and dangling modifiers within descriptive writing. Students move from analyzing mentor texts to drafting, expanding, and peer-editing their own narrative scenes to ensure clarity and precision.

Analyzing Mentor Descriptions

Students examine YA literature passages to identify how authors place modifiers for impact and clarity, creating visual maps of sentence structures.

Drafting with Participial Phrases

Students practice writing sentences starting with -ing phrases (participles). They focus on ensuring the subject immediately following the comma is the doer of the action, effectively preventing dangling modifiers.

The Sentence Expansion Challenge

Starting with simple kernel sentences (e.g., 'The dog barked'), students add layers of modifiers. They must place time, place, and manner phrases in positions that maintain the sentence's logical flow.

Peer Editing for Clarity

Students swap their descriptive drafts with a partner. Using a specific protocol, they hunt for modifiers that are too far from their subjects or ambiguous, offering suggestions for movement rather than deletion.

Polishing the Narrative Scene

Students finalize a descriptive scene, applying all feedback. They produce a 'before and after' showcase, highlighting one sentence where moving a modifier significantly improved the imagery or clarity.
