The Sand Sailor

Outback Secrets of the Thorny Devil Lizard

Deep in the heart of the hot, dry deserts of Western Australia lives a creature that looks like a miniature dragon. This is the Thorny Devil. Covered in sharp, cone-shaped spikes and walking with a slow, rocking motion, this wild survivor has developed amazing ways to live where other animals cannot.

An Armor of Spikes

At first glance, the Thorny Devil looks dangerous. Its entire body is covered in stiff, sharp spikes. These spikes make the lizard a very painful mouthful for predators like wild dogs, hawks, and snakes. If a predator gets too close, the lizard has a clever trick. It tucks its real head down between its front legs, showing a large, soft bump on its neck called a "false head." The confused predator attacks this harmless decoy, leaving the lizard's real eyes and brain safe.

Drinking with Your Feet

Water is extremely hard to find in the desert, but the Thorny Devil has a mind-blowing way to stay hydrated. Its spikes are connected by a network of tiny, microscopic pathways in its skin. When rain, morning dew, or even damp sand touches the lizard's legs, water is sucked into these tiny channels. Through a physical force called capillary action, the water is pulled straight up its body to the corners of its mouth! The lizard can literally drink just by stepping on wet sand.

Colors and Diet

This lizard is a very picky eater; it eats only ants. By sitting next to an ant trail, it flicks its sticky tongue to swallow up to 3,000 ants in one day! To hide from danger, the lizard can also change its skin color. In the cold morning, it turns dark brown to absorb the sun's warm rays. When the desert gets scorching hot, its skin changes to bright yellow and red to reflect the light and blend in with the sand.
