Lesson 1: Joining Jumble

30 Minutes

Objective

Students will solve "Add To, Result Unknown" problems within 10 using connecting cubes and five-frames.

Materials

Connecting cubes (2 colors), Five-frames, Chart paper, Lesson 1 Slides.

Warm-Up (5 min): Quick Look

Instruction: Flash a five-frame with 3 dots for 2 seconds. Ask, "How many did you see? How do you know?" Focus on subitizing.

Explicit Teaching (10 min): "I Do / We Do"

Problem: 4 construction workers were on the site. 2 more joined them. How many are there now?

Model with cubes: "I start with 4 orange cubes. I add 2 blue cubes."
Show on Five-Frame: Fill 4 spaces, then 2 more (carrying over to next frame).
Language: "4 plus 2 equals 6. 6 is the total."

Guided Practice & Activity (10 min): Tower Build

Partner Work: Students draw a card with a story. They must build the "tower" with two colors and record the equation. Teacher circulates providing immediate corrective feedback.

Formative Assessment (5 min): Cool Down

Show a picture of 5 blocks and 1 more. Ask students to write the equation on their whiteboards. Check for understanding of the '+' sign.

Lesson 7: More or Less Match

30 Minutes

Objective

Students will find the difference between two quantities (Compare, Difference Unknown) using 1-to-1 matching with cubes.

Materials

Connecting cubes, Comparison Mats, Lesson 7 Slides.

Warm-Up (5 min): Which One Doesn't Belong?

Show 4 images: A tower of 5, A row of 5, A five-frame, and a number 5. Discuss why each might not belong.

Explicit Teaching (10 min): "Match It"

Problem: Sam has 8 bricks. Kim has 5 bricks. How many more bricks does Sam have?

Build two cube trains: 8 orange and 5 blue.
Line them up side-by-side. "Where do they match? Where is the 'extra'?"
Language: "Sam has 3 more. The difference is 3."
Equation: \(8 - 5 = 3\)

Guided Practice & Activity (10 min): Cube Comparison

Small group: Give each pair two handfuls of cubes. They must count, align, and state the difference using the sentence starter: "[Set A] has ___ more than [Set B]."

Formative Assessment (5 min)

Show two towers (7 and 4). Ask students to circle the 'difference' on their worksheet and write the subtraction equation.
