Concept 1

Core Vocabulary:

Invention (noun / in•ven•tion)

A completely new process or device that has never been created before. It is built to solve a problem or fulfill a human need.

HISTORIC EXAMPLES

The Telephone (1876)

Invented by Alexander Graham Bell to transmit voice across long distances.

The Lightbulb (1879)

Developed to safely harness electricity for indoor lighting.

Teacher Modeling: Read the definition aloud. Point out that an invention must be a completely brand new, original solution. Ask students if they can think of another everyday invention.

Defining Innovations

Concept 2

Core Vocabulary:

Innovation (noun / in•no•va•tion)

An improvement or update made to an existing invention. It makes the original invention faster, smaller, more powerful, or easier to use.

INNOVATION EXAMPLES

The Smartphone (2007)

An innovation on the original telephone—adding a computer, internet, and touch screen.

LED Lightbulbs

An innovation on the original incandescent bulb that uses 90% less energy.

Teacher Modeling: Point out that we do not have to reinvent the wheel every time. We can take something that already exists and make it better. That is what we call an innovation.

Step 3: Direct Instruction

What is a Patent?

A patent is an official government document that gives an inventor the sole right to make, use, and sell their invention for a set number of years.

Without patents, anyone could easily copy an inventor's hard work and sell it themselves! Patents encourage people to invent by protecting their hard work.

1. Solve a Real Problem

The invention must solve a specific issue or make life easier.

2. Must be Novel (New)

It cannot be something that already exists or is obvious to everyone.

3. Detailed Blueprints

The inventor must submit clear drawings and descriptions showing exactly how it works.

Teacher modeling prompt: "Imagine spent five years designing a machine, only for someone to copy it in one day. Why is a patent so important to protect you?"

Adding sound alarms and LED flashing lights directly inside standard backpack zippers that trigger when left behind.

💡 Teacher Prompt: "Which idea do you think is easier to build? Why might the Glow-Clip zipper be more successful than starting from scratch?"

In your notebook, draft your own solution. Explain if your solution is an Invention or an Innovation and why.

State the specific problem clearly
Give your idea a creative name
Classify it (Invention vs Innovation)
