High Pitch
Less Water = Less Mass
The glass can vibrate fast. Fast vibrations create high frequencies and high pitches.
Low Pitch
More Water = More Mass
The extra weight slows down the vibrations. Slow vibrations create low pitches.

Tuning Challenge

Set Up: Line up 5 identical empty bottles.

Tune: Fill bottles until they play the correct notes. Use pipettes for fine-tuning!

Expert Tips
Be Gentle
Glass can break! Tap lightly with your spoon or striker. Never hit the bottles hard.
No Spills
Keep towels nearby. Even a small spill can change the bottle's pitch!
Fine-Tuning
Is the note too HIGH? Add a tiny bit of water to slow it down.
Is the note too LOW? Remove some water to speed it up!

Learning Objective
Students will apply knowledge of pitch and mass to construct and tune a five-note "bottle xylophone." They will demonstrate their understanding by precisely adjusting water levels to match specific musical notes and performing a simple melody.
Materials Needed (Per Group)
- 5 Identical glass bottles
- 1 Metal spoon or striker
- Large water pitcher
- Pipettes or syringes
- Towels for spills

"What's your hypothesis?"
Ask if more water will make the sound higher or lower. Most will guess "higher" (misconception from blowing into bottles).

Guide them to the concept of mass. More water = more weight for the glass to move. This slows down the vibration.
Common Student Challenges
Challenge: Finding the Note
Students often add too much water too quickly. Encourage them to use 1:1 "comparisons" with the group next to them or a master piano app if needed.
Challenge: Spills
A single spill changes the water level and thus the pitch. Remind students that tuning is a delicate process that requires patience.

"For a visual aid, use food coloring! Each bottle can have a different color (Rainbow Scale). This makes it much easier to discuss 'The Red Bottle' vs 'Bottle 1' during instruction."
