Lesson 1: Facts and Feelings

Instructional Sequence
1. The Hook (5 mins)
Hold up the **spider** and the **teddy bear**. Ask the class: "Which one is the BEST toy?"
"Wait! Some of you said the bear, and some said the spider! Is anyone wrong? No! Because this is an opinion —it's how you feel in your heart."
2. Facts vs. Opinions (10 mins)
Use the **Facts and Feelings Slides** to define the terms.
FACT
Always true for everyone. No matter how you feel.
OPINION
What you think or feel. People can disagree!
3. Sorting Game (10 mins)
Say the following statements. Have students stand up if it's a **Fact** and sit down if it's an **Opinion**.
"Ice cream is cold." (Fact)
"Chocolate is the best flavor." (Opinion)
"We are in our classroom." (Fact)
"School is the most fun place!" (Opinion)
4. Cut & Paste Sort (15 mins)
Distribute the **Facts vs. Feelings Worksheet**. Students will cut out the small icons and paste them into the "Fact" or "Opinion" columns.
Misconception Alert
Students often think that if many people agree with an opinion (e.g., "Pizza is yummy"), it becomes a fact. Remind them: if even one person could disagree, it's an opinion!
Support & Stretch

Lesson 2: This or That Choices
Kindergarten ELA
Learning Goals
• Orally state a personal preference.
• Use the conjunction "because" to link a preference to a reason.
• Actively listen to a peer's choice and reason.
Prep
Create a clear space in the room for students to move from one side to the other. Place a piece of blue tape or a line on the floor to divide the "Left" choice from the "Right" choice.
Instructional Sequence
1. Movement Game (10 mins)
Use the **This or That Slides**. For each prompt, have students jump to the left or right of the line based on their preference.
Teacher Prompt:
"Look at the screen! Do you like Pizza or Tacos? If you like PIZZA, move to the windows! If you like TACOS, move to the door! Ready... GO!"
2. Introducing 'Because' (5 mins)
Show the **Magic Word slide**. Explain that "because" is like a glue word that connects what we like to *why* we like it.
I like PIZZA because IT IS CHEESY.
3. Knee-to-Knee Practice (15 mins)
While students are on their "sides" of the room, have them turn to a partner on the same side and practice the sentence stem.
Teacher Role
Circulate and listen for the word "because". Prompt students who stop after the choice: "Why? Tell your friend because..."
Student Role
Must say one reason. "I like soccer because I get to run fast."
Discussion Questions
• "Did anyone on your side have a different reason than you? Can two people like the same thing for different reasons?"
• "Was it hard to think of a 'because'? How did hearing your friend's reason help you?"

On the whiteboard, draw a large slice of pizza. Then, draw a happy face eating it and some "steam" lines. Ask: "What do you think is my favorite food? How do you know?"
"My drawing gave you **clues**! The steam tells you it's hot and yummy. The happy face tells you I like it!"
2. Visual Clues Modeling (10 mins)
Use the **Picture Your Opinion Slides** to show how a simple object can have a reason attached to it through a drawing.
Key Tip
Focus on drawing one specific detail for the "why". If they like a slide because it's fast, they can draw speed lines!
3. Drafting (20 mins)
Distribute the **My Opinion Drawing Page**. Students choose one thing they love and draw it in the large box.
Circulate and ask: "What clue can you add to show WHY you like this?"
Encourage labeling if students are ready.
Support
Provide "Opinion Starter Cards" with common pictures (apple, ball, cat) for students who are struggling to choose a topic.
Stretch

Create a designated spot in the classroom called the "Soapbox." This can be a small rug, a tape square, or a low sturdy stool.
Pro-tip: Use a toy microphone to help shy students feel empowered to speak!

1. Social Skills Modeling (10 mins)
Use the **Share Your Story Slides**. Model a "Super Speaker" vs. a "Silly Speaker." Then, model a "Kind Listener" vs. a "Noisy Listener." Let the kids tell you what they saw!
2. Soapbox Moment (20-30 mins)
Break the class into small groups (4-5 students). One at a time, students stand on their "Soapbox" and read their opinion piece.
The Process:
Student stands and shows drawing.

One audience member asks a "Why" or "What" question.
3. Praise Parade (5 mins)
