Learning Objective
Students will explore the concept of capacity by filling containers to various levels and using descriptive vocabulary: full, empty, half-full, nearly full, and overflowing.
Materials
Clear plastic cups
Water table or large bins
Blue food coloring (optional)
Sponges/towels (for overflow!)
The Hook (5 mins)
Display a clear cup and a pitcher of water. Use the "Spill Challenge" slide.
"I have a challenge! I want to fill this cup as much as I possibly can without spilling a single drop. When should I stop? Tell me to 'stop' when you think it's ready."
Direct Instruction & Vocab (10 mins)
Use the Liquid Lab Slides to introduce vocabulary. Perform live demos alongside the slides:

Empty:
Turn the cup upside down to show nothing is in it. "Is it empty? Is there anything inside?"

Full:
Fill to the brim. "It's full! It's at the top. Can I add more?"

Overflow:
Deliberately overfill. Let students see the water spill over. "Oh no! This is called an overflow. Why did it happen?"
The Liquid Laboratory (20 mins)
Move students to the water stations. Give them specific commands to practice precision and control:
"Fill your cup half-full!"
"Make your cup nearly full!"
"Now make it empty!"
"Can you make it overflow?"
Teacher Tips & Misconceptions
• Surface Tension: Students may notice the "bump" of water at the top of a full cup. This is a great observation for "Nearly Full" vs "Full".
• Half-Full: Students often struggle with the middle. Encourage them to find the "center" of the cup's height.
• Air is Something: For advanced learners, you can mention that an "empty" cup is actually full of air!

Lab Setup
5 Pairs of containers per table

The Pour Test Method
This is the most direct way to compare capacity without measuring units yet.
Condition A: Overflow
If you pour Cup 1 into Cup 2 and it spills, Cup 1 holds more .
Condition B: Extra Space
If you pour Cup 1 into Cup 2 and there is room left, Cup 2 holds more .
The Hook (5 mins)
Show two containers that look very different but hold similar amounts (e.g., a tall thin bottle and a squat bowl).
"Scientists, look at these two. Which one do you think is 'the winner'? Which one holds more? Why do you think so?"
Teaching Prediction (10 mins)
Introduce the word Prediction . Emphasize that it's okay if a prediction is "wrong"—that's how we learn!
Prompting Questions:
"Is it bigger because it is taller?"
"Is it bigger because it is fatter (wider)?"
"What did our eyes tell us? What did the water tell us?"
Investigation (25 mins)
Students work in pairs. Each pair chooses a set of containers from the "Lab Tray".
Steps for Students:

Facilitation Tips
• Scaffolding: Use a marker to label containers "A" and "B" to match the worksheet.
• Vocabulary: Encourage students to use "more", "less", and "same" during their discussions.
• Spills: Spills are part of the science! Keep towels nearby and encourage students to "reset" their station.

The Rules of the Scoop
Measuring volume requires precision. If the scoops are different sizes, the measurement is not accurate.
Leveling
Teach students to use a finger or a flat stick to level off the scoop so it isn't "heaped".
Iteration
Each scoop must be emptied completely into the container before the next one is started.
The Hook (5 mins)
Bring out a large pot and a very small scoop (like a coffee scoop or a laundry detergent scoop).
"We need to fill this 'Soup Pot' for lunch! But we only have this tiny blue scoop. How many times will I have to scoop to fill it up? 5? 10? 100?"
Modeling the Count (10 mins)
Perform a live demo. Have the class count aloud together as you scoop.
Common Pitfall:
Students often lose count if they get distracted by the water. Encourage "Point Counting" - tapping the worksheet after each scoop.

The Science Secret
Most Kindergarteners are in the "pre-operational" stage. They often think a tall container holds more simply because the water level is higher. This lesson challenges that "visual bias."
How to Explain it:
"We didn't add any new water. We didn't drink any water. So it has to be the same amount, even if it looks different!"
The "Magic" Trick (10 mins)
Set up two identical clear cups. Fill them to the exact same level with blue water.
Ask: "Do these have the same amount? How can you tell?"
Pour Cup A into a tall, very skinny cylinder.
Ask: "Now which has more? Or are they still the same?"
Proving the "Magic" (10 mins)
Pour the water from the skinny cylinder back into Cup A. This is the "Aha!" moment.
"Look! It went right back to where it was. It never changed amount. It just changed clothes (containers)!"
Exploration Stations (20 mins)
Students test this themselves. They need identical pairs of containers and one outlier container.
Station Mission:
1. Fill two cups the same.
2. Pour one into the bowl.
3. Predict.
4. Pour it back to check!

Introduce the "Target Number". For most K students, 5 or 10 are the best targets to start with.

"Encourage teams to try multiple containers if their first one isn't the target. Ask: 'Was that too much or too little? What should we try next?'"
Pacing & Management
• Water Management: Use plastic trays to catch spills. This is the messiest lesson!
• Small Groups: 3-4 students per group is ideal for role distribution.
• Celebrating Success: Even if a team gets 11 instead of 10, celebrate how close they were!
