Standard Alignment: CCSS 4.NF.B.4

4.NF.B.4.A

Understand a fraction \(a/b\) as a multiple of \(1/b\). Example: Understand \(5/4\) as the product \(5 \times (1/4)\).

4.NF.B.4.B

Understand a multiple of \(a/b\) as a multiple of \(1/b\), and use this understanding to multiply a fraction by a whole number. Example: Use a visual fraction model to express \(3 \times (2/5)\) as \(6 \times (1/5)\), recognizing this as \(6/5\).

TEACHER PREP

Prior to the lesson, ensure students are comfortable with adding fractions with like denominators. Prepare the "Fraction Fractals" slides. Print the "Area Model Architect" worksheets (one per student) and the "Quick Slice" exit tickets. Have sets of two different colored pencils ready for each student to use on their area models.

Instructional Sequence

WARM-UP

15 Minutes

The "Whole" Truth Reflection

Display the first slide. Ask students: "If I have 3 pizzas and I eat \(\frac{1}{4}\) of each pizza, how much pizza did I eat total?"

Have students draw a quick sketch on a whiteboard.
Discuss: "Is there a way to write this as addition? Is there a way to write it as multiplication?"
Key Insight: \( \frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{4} = 3 \times \frac{1}{4} \).

GUIDED

25 Minutes

Step 1: The Blueprint Basics

Use the slides to introduce the Area Model. Show \(2 \times \frac{2}{3}\). Draw two identical rectangles. Divide both into thirds. Shade 2 parts in each.

Step 2: The Unit Shift

Ask: "How many \(\frac{1}{3}\) pieces are shaded total?" Count them out: 1, 2, 3, 4. So we have 4 groups of \(\frac{1}{3}\), which is \(\frac{4}{3}\).

Step 3: Building the Equation

"Whole Number \(\times\) Numerator over Denominator."

Show how \(2 \times \frac{2}{3} = \frac{(2 \times 2)}{3} = \frac{4}{3}\). Relate the numbers back to the shaded boxes in the area model.

PRACTICE

20 Minutes

Students work on the Area Model Architect Worksheet. Circulate and ask:

"Why did you divide the whole into [denominators] parts?"
"How many 'wholes' did you need to draw to show this multiplication?"
"How can you prove your answer using addition?"

Scaffolding

Provide pre-divided area models for students struggling with partitioning. Use physical manipulatives (fraction tiles) before moving to the drawing phase.

Extension

Challenge students to convert their improper fraction answers into mixed numbers. Ask them to create a real-world story problem for \(5 \times \frac{3}{4}\).
