This lesson challenges the traditional Eurocentric 'Modernization' narrative by examining the intellectual responses of Asian thinkers to 19th-century imperialism. Using post-colonial theory and primary source analysis, students critique the idea of Western progress and explore alternative models of governance and social organization proposed by those on the receiving end of empire.
