Teacher Guide & Assessment Tool for Converter's Cafe
Criteria Exceptional (4) Proficient (3) Developing (2-1) Mathematical Accuracy All F/D/P conversions are correct. Multi-step problems show accurate logic and results. High-level tasks (13-16) are error-free. Most conversions are correct (1-2 minor errors). Multi-step logic is sound. Multiple errors in basic conversions. Misunderstanding of benchmark values. Representations & Models Visuals (grids, posters, tags) are precise, labeled, and clearly represent the values. Visuals are mostly accurate and labeled. May lack some neatness or detail. Visuals are missing, unlabeled, or do not match the numeric values. Written Explanation Explains the "why" and "how" using high-level academic vocabulary (ratio, per hundred, quotient). Uses correct sentence frames or basic math vocabulary to explain steps. Explanations are missing or don't use math-specific language. Task Completion All 3 tasks are fully completed with high effort. Included at least one "Extra Spicy" challenge. 3 tasks are mostly completed. Required difficulty level met. Fewer than 3 tasks completed or instructions ignored.
Support Strategies
ELL/SPED: Focus on Tasks 1-3, 7-8. These have heavier visual components and sentence frames.
Scaffolding: For Task 13, provide a template: [Fraction] + [Decimal] + [X%] = 1.00.
Extension Strategies
Above Average: Steer these students toward Tasks 13, 14, 15, and 16. These require algebraic thinking and multiple conversion steps.
Peer Coaching: Students mastering Extra Spicy tasks can act as "Sous Chefs" to help others with spicy tasks.
Extra Spicy Key (Tasks 13-16)
Task 13: \( 3/5 (0.6) + 0.15 = 0.75 \). \( 1 - 0.75 = 0.25 \). Missing percent = 25% .
Task 14: Tip (1/6 of 120) = $20. Tax (0.085 of 120) = $10.20. Total = $150.20. Tip was higher.
Task 15: 1/8 = 0.125 ($62.50/year). 2 years = $125. $125/$500 = 1/4 = 25% .
Task 16: Budget = $500 (since 2/5 = 200). Profit = 600 - 200 (spent) = $400. Profit as % of Budget = 400/500 = 80% .
