What is a Fraction?

A fraction represents **part of a whole** unit or a part of a set.
In building, we use fractions to measure lengths that aren't exact whole inches or feet.

Begin with a "Think-Pair-Share." Ask: "If you were building a castle, why would it be important for every stone to be exactly the same size?" Connect their answers to the concept of **equal parts** in fractions.

Use the Fortress Intro Slides to introduce vocabulary. Focus heavily on the denominator being the "Total Construction" and the numerator being the "Specific Section."

Draw various shapes on the board. Invite students to "architect" them into equal parts (halves, thirds, fourths, eighths). Purposely draw one with unequal parts to trigger a "Building Code Violation" discussion.
